I tried men’s skincare for a fortnight…

As I stood looking at the aisles for a new skincare range to try (as you may know by now, I’m a massive Skin food junkie) I randomly thought, how different can men’s skincare really be?  So I decided to have my face to become my own little petri dish and test away…

So, I don’t think I’m alone when we glance at all skincare and think ‘well, isn’t this all the damned same?’ when it comes to the basics.  Whilst I obviously  appreciate my skin doesn’t have the ability to grow an epic beard (don’t worry, there’s still time…) When it comes to simple ‘moisturizing’ surely it’s the same, right?

I asked the husband, who of course not one to be into anything remotely beauty related merely shrugged at me, leaving it for me to find out myself.  So off I plodded to the local Asda, where I picked up the Nivea men ‘Protect & Care rehydrating moisturiser’ and the Nivea Men ‘Protect & Care deep cleaning face wash’.

To begin with I started using the face wash alone, I want to say ‘because science ennit’ but it’s actually more a case of ‘I just purchased that one before the moisturiser’, oops.  Anyways, this face wash claims to ‘thoroughly cleanse the skin and to clear away impurities and oil’ it also contains aloe vera (which is a skin saviour badass as we know it) and pro-vitamin B5 which aids skin hydration and its ability to retain said hydration –oooooooh fahncy.

Once on my face, it felt zingy.  Like minty fresh… Like Madame Colgate stepped out of her toothpaste tube and slid herself all over my face zingy, which I really didn’t expect to feel and was incredibly different when compared to my usual soap free wash.  It didn’t lather once gently massaged into my skin, but worked with my silicone facial exfoliator well, and once washed away? Ho-ly smokes, guys, seriously.  My pores? they were SNATCHED.  I honestly couldn’t believe how good my pores looked! My face however, did feel somewhat dehydrated, despite its claims, but this stuff? Daaaaaamn, I was impressed.

A day later I began using the Nivea Men moisturiser alongside the wash.  Again containing ingredients aloe vera and pro-vitamin B5, the emphasis of this range relies heavily on hydrating the skin, which as someone who suffers with drier skin it’s needed.

I found the moisturiser to be quite thin in consistency, which triggered my inner skin food snob, immediately wondering if this really could hydrate my skin as much as I needed it to.  It applied wonderfully, felt cooling on the skin and instantly sank in… buuuuuut that’s probably as good as it got.  My skin didn’t feel very soft at all, my husband described it as ‘it feels as though your skin is still damp, it’s not smooth to run a hand over your face, it drags’ so I ended up adding my usual oil bath before bed to help feed my face that little bit more.

As the fortnight progressed, I did find that I had an epic breakout.  Epic for me, I’ll admit, with 4 humongous zits scattered along my chin and jawline which I found a little bizarre and painful.  It could have been the change in routine, however, my instinct tells me this routine may have actually been a little too harsh on my skin and that if I should wish to continue, maybe it’s worth buying the sensitive options available instead.

Prices can fluctuate between from £3 to £7 for either product (I paid around £4 give or take for each one from Asda) which wasn’t badly priced! But would I keep up with it? Probably not.  I’ll miss the snatched pores, but I can’t be dealing with the breakouts and the feeling of physically dry skin.  If you’re on a budget and don’t suffer sensitive skin, guys and gals these could do pretty well for you, but for me? Nawp.  Onto the next one!
