I am not my hair by India Arie
"Be The Beautiful You Choose!"
My name is Talissa Gemma Forrester, I am 29 years old. Born in London, went to university in Winchester, did some travelling then moved to Leeds and 7 years later, I haven't looked back.
A few months back I went through a bad relationship breakdown which completely changed my outlook on life and I decided to pursue a career path I had always dreamed of and gave birth to the idea of "Forrester Beauty".
I had always wanted to get involved with the black beauty and Hair industry in the UK as I sometimes have felt that most of what we have easy access to is created by the US market or massive companies that don't really understand your average, hardworking, intelligent, modern-day Black British woman.
I had spent years relaxing, weaving and braiding my hair, damaging my scalp and hair, resulting in some hair loss. When I turned 29 I decided that I wanted to grow my hair, but I, like some women, don't feel confident or attractive with really short hair. I tend to look really young and boyish as a result of having a quite masculine facial structure, and am completely envious of women who can rock that look and look beautiful but I have always felt more confident with shoulder length hair, I think it suits me and makes me feel beautiful.
So, I had a dilemma, my Natural Hair was damaged and need a lot of care and attention if I ever had any hope of growing it and generally having a healthier head of hair but wearing my hair out all the time with the condition it was in would make me feel self conscious and unattractive. Then one day I just thought "Why haven't I ever tried wigs!" They would give me the freedom to treat and care for my natural hair regularly but also give me a bit of my confidence back.
I bought my first wig recently and have fallen in love with it. I wanted to create this company as I found when looking for wigs and wig products there were a lot of scams out there and overpriced goods, and I found it difficult to find one place where I could get everything I needed, let alone a UK based company.
I also wanted to show a brutally honest record of my journey from damaged hair and scalp to a healthy head of hair (hopefully!) through the use of my products and others as well as my use of wigs.
I do believe that the perception of beauty is as individual to a person as their DNA, So, although my company focus' on the use of wigs and natural hair care, the company mantra is "Be The Beautiful You Choose".
