We flew into Nadi on the main island of Viti Levu and took the hotel shuttle to the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, less than an hours drive away. Immediately you get that island feel with sugar plantations and palm trees everywhere.
I am 100% recommending the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa! No, they are not paying me to do so!
The resort was brand new when we went there and the staff was helpful, friendly and efficient. A happy “Bula!” meaning hello, will greet you everywhere. Their bright pink and green plants all over, make the gardens lush and tropical. It really is a paradise, plus, one look at their infinity pool and you will never want to leave again.
Every evening at sunset, a torch-lighting ceremony takes place. The InterContinental went above and beyond to entertain us! They had traditional dancers from a nearby village come to sing and dance with us.
We were also treated to drink the traditional kava. Sitting on the floor around a large wooden bowl filled with a muddy-looking liquid that is scooped into half a coconut shell. Kava is a mildly narcotic drink, not illegal, made from a mixture of powdered pepper plant root and water, that results in a numb feeling around your mouth, lips and tongue and, supposedly, a sense of relaxation. I was not a fan…

Sailing on the Seaspray
This day trip sailing adventure was more than we expected. We got picked up at our hotel and boarded a fast catamaran to Mana island where we transferred directly to the Seaspray. Friendly staff and unlimited free drinks, made this trip fun fun fun! Lunch was also included.
I was in awe of the bluest water I had ever seen. We stopped off at several islands as well as an island village and had kava with the elders. Modriki island was our highlight of the day, they filmed The Castaway (with Tom Hanks) here! We could snorkel at our leasure and relax on the beach. I snorkelled forever and still could not get enough! I loved it!
Self drive site-seeing
The hotel gave us the local rental company’s details and we rented a car to get a feel of island life and travel to nearby villages. The car was a bit of a shock to see, as it arrived without hubcaps. Luckily it was clean and in good condition and we had no trouble. You have to be cautious while driving in Fiji, as animals and kids alike run wild and may cross the road at any time. We passed many cows on, and next to, the road. Please be aware of this and do not speed! The roads are okay, even though many are just dirt roads. We visited some curio shops and had lunch at one hotel and drinks at another hotel along the way. It is totally worth it.
If ever you need an island escape, few are as authentic and unique as Fiji. I am certain you will love it no matter where you stay!
