The weekend was monumental for Angelina Jolie in more ways than one. The celebrity mom had all of her kids with her at the premiere of her film, First They Killed My Father, at Telluride Film Festival this past weekend.
Angelina co-wrote, directed, and produced the film, which is based on Loung Ung's memoir. Loung is a Cambodian civil rights activist who was a little girl during the rule of Khmer Rouge. Ung suffered the loss of several family members who were Killed by the regime. First They Killed My Father was especially significant for Jolie's 16-year-old son, Maddox, who was born in Cambodia. Maddox helped with the production of the film, which included reviewing several drafts of the movie.
"I wanted my son to know who his countrymen are," Angelina Jolie told Vanity Fair during a post-screening discussion of the film. "You see a vacuum, a rise in extremism, misinformation… little girls feeling like they’re completely left alone," she added. "I hope what you see is… how people come through, all the little Luongs out there."
Jolie also commented on her life after separating from husband Brad Pitt. "I don't enjoy being single," she revealed to the Sunday Telegraph. "It's not something I wanted. There's nothing nice about it. It's just hard," she added.
Angelina further explained, "Sometimes maybe it appears I am pulling it all together, but really I am just trying to get through my days. Emotionally, it's been a very difficult year and I have had some other health issues. So my health is something I have to monitor."
Angelina Jolie's film reportedly received a standing ovation this past weekend. She and Brad co-parent six kids together. Check out the trailer for First They Killed My Father below!
