Question About The Friar In Romeo And Juliet

The Friar is a good character and an honest man who helped Romeo and Juliet. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons, and support your reasons with evidence.

The Friar has many characteristics thet I will go through. He seems to be a good character at times and also a bad character at other times.

I think that the Friar is good because when Juliet and Romeo were together with the Friar, they wanted help and he agreed quickly, “Come, come with me, and we will make short work. For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone”.

Whenever Romeo or Juliet make a request, the Friar answers it without any questions. Like when Juliet wanted to seek help because she didn’t want to marry Paris. “Tell me not, Friar, that thou hears’t of this. Unless thou tell me how I may prevent it”. Then the Friar answers, “Take though this vial, being then in bed, and this distilled liquor drink thou off”.

I also think that the Friar is bad because he did things that caused major problems without thinking about it. Like when Romeo wants to marry Juliet. “Romeo, there dead, was husband to that Juliet, I married them; and their stol’n marriage-day”.

If the Friar really took things seriously, he wouldn’t help because there could be a lot of lying to keep the marriage a  secret, because Romeo and Juliet were from 2 families that hated each other. The actions would also force Juliet to disobey her parents.

At Act IV, Scene I, when Juliet asked the friar for help because her parents wanted her to marry Paris, his description of the ‘solution’ to the problem sounds troublesome enough. “No warmth, no breath, shall testify thou livest; like death, when he shuts up the day of life”.

In conclusion, I have to disagree with this statement, because if the Friar thought through all of this thoroughly, there would have been little to no problems.
