Tween to teen back to school skincare tips

This post is in collaboration with CLEAN & CLEAR and #WeAllGrow Latina Network.

My son may not like to do dishes and I may need to remind him to take out the trash but when it comes to his morning routine, he’s pretty on top of things. He always leaves for school showered, groomed and pressed to impress (yes, he irons his clothes!). I can’t take credit for this though. It takes me a long time to get it together in the morning. His stepdad and grandmother have been a big influence on how he starts his day, I have to say. They’re both pretty impressive when it comes to their day to day routine, and he’s observed and absorbed every bit of it. Just goes to show you that your kids are watching all of the adults around them. It also shows that your kid may not pick up your bad habits after all, in case you’re worried. I am not, by any means, a morning person and worried he would shlep into the day like I do.

If your son is a tween, and you’re hoping to get them on track with a day to day skincare routine, here are my tips:

My son is fortunate enough to have his own bathroom, and I’ve made sure to give his grooming and self-care needs withe same attention to detail as I do mine (eventhough his requires far less maintenance). If that’s not the case in your home, set aside a cart or cabinet with your son’s grooming and skincare needs. Make sure to buy specific ones for changing skin. This will help them understand that a bar of soap does not solve all-the-things. In fact, it can dry their skin, clog their pores and cause more breakouts. For example, my son has acne gels, toners, cleansing wipes, exfoliating scrubs and regular face wash all at his finger tips, including all of his shaving and hair products. He’s got his personal TLC stash of goodies should an emergeny breakout occur right before an, ahem, date.

If you need help figuring out what to get first to help yout tween or teen develop skincare habits, start with these products by Neutrogena.

CLEAN & CLEAR Morning Burst Facial Cleanser

This cleanser delivers a nice citrus scent to kick off the day and is packed with BURSTING BEADS® to wake up the skin. It gently removes dirt and oil and is enriched with Vitamin C and Ginseng. It’s prefectly fine for everyday use, and it just feels amazing.

CLEAN & CLEAR Deep Action Exfoliating Scrub

Another great product to have handy is the CLEAN & CLEAR® Deep Action Exfoliating Scrub. I suggest using this one every few days, as you don’t want your son;s skin to get too dry. This is especially good for those pesky blackheads. The scrub is designed to invigorate skin by cleansing pores deep down and gently exfoliating surface skin.

CLEAN & CLEAR Deep Action 60 Second Shower Mask

CLEAN & CLEAR® Deep Action 60 Second Shower Face Mask is a great product for tweens/teens who are fine with showering in the morning before school but just want to head out the door. The mask works with the steam to remove traces of dirt, oil and dead skin.

Having these options handy will help empower your child to take care of his skin, especially at this age when skincare is marketed primarily for girls. My son used to shy away from it, but now he sees the huge difference it makes to keep on top of cleansing his face.
