Keep Your Lips Happy and Healthy

Tags: lip lip balm

We paint them red, we paint them silver. We slather them with shimmery gloss. We even sometimes neglect them until they go dry on us. That’s right I’m talking about Lips. Lips are like every other part of your body but needing so much more care. Lips only have a very thin layer of skin between them and the world, no matter how pouty they are. They require a care routine tailor made just for them to stay that perfect soft cloud you’re hoping doesn’t smudge on that goodnight kiss from your date. Here’s how to keep your lips healthy and happy.

Stay hydrated
Like every other inch of skin on you your lips need water to stay healthy. A lot of your skin’s moisture should come from within as it has a hard time absorbing everything it needs through all the barriers. Getting in those recommended 8 glasses a day will help keep your lips a perfect pout.

Licking your lips
You every noticed how getting water (yes the good stuff) on your skin oddly seems to dry it out more? Well imagine that effect happening with every swipe of your tongue. Licking your lips is a no no, especially when they are chapped. Instead of licking your lips reach for your trusty chap stick (as I have done multiple times writing this post. Why does talking about dry lips make your lips dry?).

Lip balm
A good lip balm is the holy grail of lip care. Make sure to go pick a lip balm with moisturizing ingredients, like shea butter, and not because it just looks so cute! Your lip balm should be the function over fashion of your beauty routine. Keeping your lips moisturized and nourished is the golden rule of a perfect smile.

Lip mask
For an extra dose of moisture and nourishing lip masks (much like face masks) are a great addition to a beauty routine. Recently I am obsessed with the Matchta Lip Sleeping Mask from Once Upon a Tea. This mask is super moisturizing and packs a lot of good stuff into your lips while you sleep. I recommend using a lip mask at least twice a week as your lips take more abuse then any other part of your skin.

Sun screen
The barrier of your lips is actually so thin that they cannot protect themselves from the sun. There is no tanning for your lips, just getting crispy and cancery. Finding a lip balm with SPF in it is a must to keep your lips happy. I use the Soft Lips stick in vanilla with SPF 20 (we all remember from (How Important Is Suncreen Really?) that the higher the SPF the better) which kept my lips nice and unchapped and unburnt while spending time at the beach.

Lip scrubs
Now I know what you’re thinking, if my lips are as thin as you say why on earth would I want to scrub a layer off? Well your lips could probably stand to lose a few cells. You know those dry ones just sitting on top of those pretty new ones just waiting to shine. Most lip scrubs are manual ones instead of chemical, meaning they have granules rub off the dead skin instead of breaking it down on the chemical level. But remember, your lips deserve gentleness, don’t rub as hard as you would on your face. Just apply a bit to your finger and gently scrub the skin off then rinse it off. Remember your skin needs more moisture after exfoliation so make sure to moisturize!

Remember that single layer barrier between your lips and the sun, pollution, that questionable casserole your coworker brought to the company party? Well here’s the good news about makeup, that red lipstick or glitter gloss you paint on every morning actually does more than just catching that hottie’s eye. It adds another layer between you and the big bad world. Just make sure your lip makeup isn’t drying (like mattes) or it can still make your lips unhappy.
