R Madhavan Says, “He Faced Racial Discrimination While Growing Up”

R Madhavan who is currently in news for his upcoming web series Breathe has expressed and shared the horrific incident of racism, he faced during a certain course of his life.

“I was called a Madrasi, and all sorts of discrimination would happen
against me and I wouldn’t even realize. Frankly, I didn’t know what a
racial discrimination was until I was 20. It is only now that people in
India are widely aware of the term ‘racism’ are talking about it.”

“I don’t think I am scarred for life, or I was deprived of opportunities due to the Discrimination. I was the biggest rowdy of my school. I would ask people to watch out. I don’t feel bad that I had to go through the phase as I feel that life was preparing me to become an actor.”

Madhavan further adds, “I withdraw nuances from all my prior experiences to do the kind of roles I do. I can’t do a Manu Sharma (Tanu Weds Manu) without knowing how people live in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Due to my upbringing there, I could get the accent and the gestures convincingly on screen.”
