In a shocking revelation, The Sun reported that two of the newspaper’s undercover reporters were asked for sums as high as $187,000 to “spot fix” markets, such as the exact amount of runs scored in an over. Two Indian bookies offered to sell the newspaper all the details of rigged play during the match.
Indian fixer said:
“Before the match. I will tell you what over, and how many runs, and then you place all your bets on that over.”
Bookies: We Have Fixed 17 to 18 Matches
Both the bookies also claimed that they have fixed the matches in other T20 leagues including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Australia’s Big Bash.
ICC Responded With A Official Statement
Alex Marshall, general manager anti-corruption (ICC) said: “We have now received all materials relating to The Sun investigation. We take the allegations extremely seriously and they will be investigated by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit working with anti-corruption colleagues from Member countries.”
“From my initial assessment of the material, there is no evidence, either from The Sun or via our own intelligence, to suggest the current Test Match has been corrupted. At this stage of the investigation, there is no indication that any players in this Test have been in contact with the alleged fixers.”
England & Wales Cricket Board’s Official Statement
On the other hand, a spokesperson from the England & Wales Cricket Board said that the ECB works closely with the ICC to protect the integrity of cricket. And also, no English cricketer is involved.
