Most Dangerous Cities In The United States Of America

In this article, we examine the homicides rates of different cities of the United States of America. The Rate is measured by the number of citizens out of 100,000 who were victims of homicide. World Atlas had calculated the Homicide Rate with the help of reports which were published in the local newspaper of each city.

1. Baltimore (51.1)

Baltimore is the 29th-most populous city in the country. There were 318 murders in the city in 2016, according to annual Crime Statistics Released by the Baltimore Police Department. Last year, the homicide rate was 22.05. While in 2015, the year’s tally of 344 homicides was second only to the record 353 in 1993. Therefore, Baltimore takes a 1st position in the list of America’s most dangerous cities.

2. Detroit (44.7)

Detroit is the 21st-most populous city in the United States. In 2016, Detroit saw a total of 301 homicides, which creates a rate of 44.7. The city held the title of murder capital between 1985–1987 with a murder rate around 58 per 100,000. Therefore, Detroit is the 2nd most dangerous city in America.

3. New Orleans (44.5)

New Orleans is the 46th largest city (population wise) in the United States. There were 176 murders in the city, according to annual crime statistics released by the New Orleans Police Department. It has the third highest homicide rate (44.5) in the United States. It becomes the “Murder Capital of the United States” in 2011.

4. Kansas City (42.5)

Kansas City ranks fourth place on the list of most dangerous cities in America. It has a crime rate of 42.46. It is the 37th-most populous city in the United States. Also, Kansas City can be found both in the states of Kansas and Missouri.

5. Cleveland (35.3)

Cleveland is the 51st largest city (population wise) in the United States. It has a homicide rate of 35.3 making it the 5th most dangerous city in the United States.

6. Memphis (34.7)

In 2016, 228 murders were officially recorded in the city of Memphis which creates homicide rate of 34.7.
