Getting the average man fired up isn’t particularly difficult. A subtle flash of skin, an accidental nip-slip, or the mere mention of sex cam girls can be enough to send a man’s urges (and other things) sky-high.

Meanwhile, the same cannot necessarily be said for women.  The topic of ‘what women want has perplexed men throughout history. If only it was so easy to turn women on and hadn’t become proverbial putty in your hands, but it sadly isn’t so.

Or is it?

The Truth About Sexual Desire and Women

Many women have a more complicated relationship with sex than men. At least, in the sense that women aren’t as ridiculously preoccupied with sex on a 24/7 basis as is the case with most men. 

Which it is…as extensive scientific research has shown beyond a reasonable doubt.

But this does not mean that women do not respond to certain erotic stimuli similarly to their male counterparts. The difference is that it’s more about context than an instant reaction to some exposure to women.

As explained by sex researcher Emily Nagoski, Ph.D., “Context is made of two things: the circumstances of the present moment—whom you’re with, where you are, whether the situation is novel or familiar, risky or safe, etc.—and your brain state in the present moment—whether you’re relaxed or stressed, trusting or not, loving or not, right now, at the moment.” 

This doesn’t sound very easy, but it is quite straightforward.  Following an extensive study conducted in 2010, a group of clinical psychologists identified 4 main categories of sexual cues that never fail to ignite a woman’s sexual desire:

1. Love/emotional bonding cues

Making a woman feel loved and appreciated will always hold the key to her heart (and other things). Women’s sexual desire has been found to reach a peak when they feel a sense of love with their partner, feel a sense of security, and feel a sense of commitment. When they feel safe, loved, appreciated, and generally content, sexual desire follows. Though this can be taken to a higher level through romantic surprises – i.e., doing something unexpected that sends a powerful message about love, thought, sentiment, and commitment.

2. Explicit/erotic cues

Make no mistake about it – women watch and enjoy porn. Perhaps not merely on the same scale as men, but they do. Erotic cues have the same influence on women as men – everything from talking dirty to watching other people having sex to discussing fantasies and so on. It’s just that the kinds of sexual encounters depicted in a traditional skin flick don’t usually correspond with the erotic desires of women. When polled, women typically profess to prefer ‘gentler’ porn movies, soft porn, and in many instances, gay porn. 

3. Visual/proximity cues

Place the average man near a woman in a dangerously short skirt and no bra under her top, and it’s all hands on deck. With women, the same visual cues apply, though again tend to be slightly subtler. Seeing a man who has class and is well-groomed, a well-dressed man who exudes confidence and sophistication, watching men take part in physical activities, seeing a man take off his top to reveal a toned physique – all the kinds of things that get a lot of women hot under the collar. 

4. Romantic/implicit cues 

Last, a sizeable proportion of women are as powerless against old-fashioned romantic vibes today as they ever were. Chivalry is not dying, either. It’s just thinner on the ground in modern times. Though, if anything, this gives those who practice it an even better chance of wowing the women they set their sights on. Walking on the beach, watching the sunset, dancing close, whispering sweet nothing, gently touching a partner’s hair or face, laughing together, watching romantic movies – all seeming cliché activities that work.

In a Nutshell…

The crux of the whole thing is quite straightforward. Women get fired just as men do but don’t react similarly to the same stimuli. Quite the opposite, as many things that men find deeply erotic probably have the exact opposite effect on a typical woman.

Figuring out what women want isn’t easy, as all women want and need different things.  But when it comes to the kinds of stimuli and contextual cues that make women horny, most women share many similarities.
