I received a free Book in exchange for an honest review. Megan is the most devoted and responsible child on the planet. In the first book, she found four abandoned newborn kittens and began raising them. Now she needs money to neuter them and to buy them toys. So she finds a job pet sitting for the weekend for the neighbor.  Somehow she convinces her friend, Jill, to join her in the project.

The Hard Work Is in the Details

What is lovely about these books is the details that Ms. Foland includes. Children reading this book will understand how much work it is to care for pets, and what pranks the pets can pull that could potentially get the pet sitter into trouble.

As both Megan and Jill find out, pet sitting is not a job for the faint-hearted. Megan gets bit several times by a parrot, tricked by a chocolate lab who sneaks out and gets all muddy then tracks it all over the house. They lose the cat. The bird with clipped wings flies out of reach.

Megan struggles with her friend Jill’s lack of commitment to the job when she turns up late for one check-in. At one point Megan gives her friend a stern lecture. I felt very sorry for Jill. I would have liked to have heard what she thought.

Plenty of Adventure and Obstacles In Megan’s World

This book did not lack problems and obstacles for the characters to overcome. What would make this book better as a fiction book for children, in my opinion, is a heroine who is less perfect. Megan is a great gal, but she’s all business. She lacks the childish sense of fun and naughtiness. There are hints of fun, but no faults. The series is one-sided and focused only on Megan with no characters providing any insight to the story or her deeper character traits.

Three Stars As a Fiction

I recommend this book to all children who love animals. It is a five-star instruction manual. It may inspire kids to take more responsibility when they buy, find or get a pet. I recommend that parents and children read and talk about the book if they find or are considering adopting a pet. Pamela might consider including some discussion questions for parents or teachers. There are some great topics for discussion in the book.
