About the Author : Born in Chicago and raised outside Philadelphia, Clark has taught and practiced intensive care for newborn infants on four continents and eight countries, as he continues to do. He lives with his bride of 38 years in Alabama. They have two grown children and two grandchildren. He has been an avid solo hiker, backpacker, and climber since he was 11 years old. “Outland Exile” is his debut novel and the first book of an expected five book series centering on aging, medical care, cybernetics, society and faith in a future America.

My Say : I picked this book because of it’s appealing title and blurb. W. Clark Boutwell excels at style and language. This book is set in a dystopian future where the Democratic Unity rules and the United States have been fractured. Malila Chiu is a veteran lieutenant officer who seems to have a perfect life including great friends, a successful job and the perfect life! When Malila is captured, and her platoon is murdered, she’s sure her life is over but everything she knows is about to change. The more time she spends with her captor, the more she learns that the outlands may not be what she thought.
I really liked the Author’s descriptions for Malila’s friends. Every word, every detail, like the color of their clothes, reflects their personalities. The most intense part of the novel is when Malila has been captured and she’s in the cold in an unfamiliar environment, being held hostage. I had to keep reading, because every detail was gripping and intense. That incident of bear and his men found her made me nervous. She learns the truth of family, strength, honor, friendship, and kindness as she and her captor survived through hostile lands. A story of survival; Outland Exile is a well-written dystopian adventure. It’s a powerful blend of post-apocalyptic fiction, science fiction and social commentary! Outland Exile is a must-read for anyone who loves to read fiction. With strong characterisation and storyline; I would like to recommend this book.
