Book Review : The Soft Target By Kalyan Nanda

The Blurb : Is God good? Or is He a manipulative villain who plays with the lives of his creations in the name of karma? As far as Mohan Mishra is concerned, God is a villain. Mohan is God’s soft target, for He ‘blesses’ him with a strange mental problem and kills his support system when he needed it the most. The Soft Target is the Story of a boy’s journey into manhood, as he takes on God with his mental prowess, defeating Him at every stage, thus making God his soft target. Supported by great friends and a loving wife, Mohan fights an epic battle against the murderous society, the conniving legal system and ultimately God himself, with remarkable courage and spirit.

My Say :  It’s an old saying that never judge a Book by its cover. This totally fits on this book written by kalyan nanda. First impression of this book was like ‘a non-fictional book loaded with those life experiences motivational quotes’ but hello! Get ready to be surprised!! This book is high on literature that’s again a surprising thing coming from an Indian Author. I loved the style of writing and use of words. Language is simple yet attractive so I was glued till the end.

The Soft Target by Kalyan Nanda is an interesting story of the protagonist Mohan, who is suffering from a strange mental illness thus he is unable turn his thoughts into words but otherwise this genius was capable of getting into IIT. In the beginning, it was looking like the story of Mohan but soon the author introduces other three characters Revathy, Nikhil and Brij, with their equal importance in the story. Dealing with their own social misfits complex, they all became good friends in IIT Mumbai, as their thinking matches and have better understandings of each other.

The beauty of this book is that its full of drama yet it inspires you. There were many moments  where I was actually like ‘ WHATT !! REALLY!!  Still the story never goes off the track. There was a perfect balance of emotions and humour which is quite difficult to manage by an author. The explanation of certain things is quite terrific.

I actually liked the flow of story which was generated by the Author to connect with the readers. The author successfully manifests a healthy environment for a reader where one can be astonished and enjoy those sarcastic one-liners. Being a fan of one liners, I actually wrote down few one liners in my diary while reading the book. ( Not writing here because I want you to find them on your own whenever you read this book).

This book has all the elements of wit and sarcasm which are used quite well. That date scene, breakup scene, proposal scene and coincidences created in the story, all were amazing. The way author has narrated the life of Mohan is quite addictive and this book treats you with an informal style of giving inspiration.

There are also few things which I disliked as in the end, the explanation given by the author was actually not required. He should have trusted on his open ended closure and left everything upon the thinking of the reader. Few events were quite predictable which was again a little turn off for me.

Overall it was an interesting read up. The unique plot and different characters behind the book surely made it a little special. I would like to give 4 out of 5 stars to this book and I wish good luck to the Author for his upcoming projects.
