About the Book : The First Five Days by John O. and Archie A. is the first Book of the Lionean Series. Its a fantasy novel that follows the exploits of an appointed official to a dangerous position in a far-away country for the first five days of his reign. His nation is confronted with wars on a regular basis and its military leaders have the tendency of being killed mysteriously. When Yosi takes his place as the new man in charge, he has to be careful to not end up with the same fate because he also had to defend Lionea. The main character Yosi Sint, who is appointed the military leader of Lionea after the former HN is poisoned in mysterious circumstances. He has not been brought up in the court and is not familiar with all of the deadly political games afoot. The story covers the first five days of his rule, where he must investigate multiple plots to unseat the government and multiple assassinations, including his own. How does one fight against an invisible assassin? Exactly how many invisible women are in Lionea? Yosi must navigate the treacherous currents of political intrigue afoot in Lionea to keep the country together, even when it seems determined to tear itself apart.

My Say : I wanted to love The First Five Days but it was a boring read up for me. I wasn’t a big fan of the prelude and the closing notes on the glories. It seemed a bit like sloppy story-telling to me which was going nowhere and coming from nowhere. I felt like it inhibited the world-building aspect of the story, just to tell the readers about how things are set up instead of showing them in the book itself. The ending is also very abrupt. I understand that there will be a sequel but this book just stopped with so many loose ends. I found several of them to be unsatisfying and anti-climatic, while others were never resolved in a way that made me unhappy instead of eager for more.

Another thing that I disliked about this book was that it was not just written from one perspective which can be confusing for some readers. The story consists of many dramatic scenes which made the plot overly dramatic. The first five days are essentially revolving around Yosi’s life. The backstory and character building were good but towards the end did not grow. This leaves the reader to wonder and that may be a good sign if the Author has the intention of picking where he leaves off in book two.

The backstory and the retelling of emotions are well written and clear. The book does contain sexual content and references to rape, sexual exploitation and abuse. The format and rate of the material are similar to what you may have seen in The Game of Thrones series.

I would like to give 2 out of 5 stars.
