London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017 has now officially closed. Featuring some of the most talented designers in the business, the event saw a range of exciting new styles hit the runways. Helen Beaumont explores some of the most innovative trends from London Fashion Week.

Experimental sleeves
In London, a lot of designers decided to get really experimental with sleeves. Both Joseph and Ryan Lo opted for extra-long sleeves, with Lo ensuring they dipped past the models’ waistlines. Ashley Williams brought 80s-esque puffy sleeves back, proving that 80s fashion firmly on trend. Marque Almeida layered sleeves as decoration over huge vintage basketball t-shirts. Arm-wear will never be the same!
Glam crocs
Crocs are very controversial footwear. They’re really comfortable but spectacularly ugly… until now. Vogue reports that Christopher Kane sent models out wearing brightly coloured crocs, adorned in cascades of crystals. Admittedly, this really fashion forward move divided critics everywhere but glam crocs are just crazy enough to become a popular fad next season, so watch this space!
Distressed denim
Denim is the fabric of the moment. If we take London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017 at face value, distressed denim will be everywhere next season. Brands ranging from Versus – Versace’s sister brand, to Topshop’s Unique, pushed this style to the limit this time around, littering their collections with ultra-distressed frayed denim items which just screamed rock ‘n roll!
Single earrings
Over the past few seasons, earrings have come in all shapes and sizes. London Fashion Week saw designers such as JW Anderson, Simone Rocha and Mary Katrantzou embrace single earrings. Katrantzou took it to a whole other level at her Ancient Greece-inspired event, opting for almost life-sized olive branch earrings, rendered in poppy-coated metals which jangled down models’ necks.
Historical fashion
If you’re researching period costumes, Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017 can provide some inspiration. Whether it was Mary Katrantzou’s Ancient Greek geometric prints, JW Anderson’s Tudor-esque sleeves or Erdem’s decision to channel Downton abbey, historical-inspired fashion was everywhere! The Polaroid dress in Christopher Kane’s ‘Make Do and Mend’ collection was so inspired!
Innovative new styles
And these chic styles were only the start. With Roksanda’s silk languid dresses, Burberry’s ground-breaking buy-to-wear collection, Mulberry’s jagged hemlines and more, Fashion Week was an absolute triumph! Helen Beaumont’s career started at Camberwell College of Art, where she studied the History of Art and Design, specialising in costume during her final year. After completing study, Helen became a costume buyer for theatre and opera. She has since become a professional costume designer, with a keen interest in period clothing. Throughout her career, Helen has created authentic costumes for prestigious companies such as the Universal Studios, Disney, BBC, Tiger Aspect and the Young Vic Theatre.
