Ali to be Honored at Louisville Game

The Louisville Cardinals will be flying like a butter fly and stinging like a bee this weekend.

The football program this Saturday will be honoring one Muhammad Ali with a slew of tributes slated when the team plays the Florida State Seminoles.

Ali, a Louisville native and a diehard Cardinal fan, passed away on June 3.

“Muhammad Ali’s presence and generosity to our department will never be forgotten and the support Lonnie and her family have given in all aspects have meant a lot to me during the course of my career at the University of Louisville,” athletic director Tom Jurich said this week. “They are treasured in our community and we wanted to properly thank them for everything they’ve meant to the city and the university.”

The following list tells how exactly Ali, the greatest boxer to ever grace planet earth, will be honored:

  • A 30-foot graphic of a butterfly with the work “ALI” is painted behind one of the end zones.
  • A butterfly logo will be on the Louisville’s alternate red chrome helmets, which is also making their debut against FSU
  • Asaad, Ali’s son, will give a commemorative coin to both teams before the game’s start.
  • Lonnie, Ali’s wife, will be honored on the field for her rigorous work with the “Ali in All of US” initiative.
  • Close to 3,000 Ali shirts will be given to students before the start of the game.
  • During the game, several highlights of Ali’s career will be shown throughout the game.

And, oh yea, there is a football game between the Cardinals and Seminoles set for noon ET Saturday.
