5 Must haves to be a MOTOR MOUTH RJ

My 18-year-old cousin came to my place on Sunday for an interview as RJ for a local radio channel. She was nervous as well as excited for the interview. Being an eloquent speaker and lively girl she was pretty confident but still couldn’t seem to fight off the normal butterflies dances in her belly. I am a lecturer in Communication Skills and thus, was being the mock interviewer. After having done the rehearsals, she asked me some MUST HAVES of a good RJ. I thought that it might be helpful to others too, so; here I go.

TRAIT #1 – Communication:

Though you may not be allotted the chat sessions since the beginning, but all the time you have to be in communication. You should be able to engage the audience or they will just make a click or press a button and shift to the other channel. While handling a show on your own, you have to talk and talk and talk. Sometimes, you need to make some jokes or pull on an emotional string. But, you should remember that the silly jokes repeated again and again cannot help you pull a complete show.

TRAIT #2 – Voice:

One just can’t neglect the importance of voice as being an RJ it is the only thing you can present to the audience. It needn’t be as melodious as Lata Mangeshkar but it should be appealing to the listeners.

TRAIT #3 – Engaging Talks:

Being a good communicator doesn’t necessarily mean that you are guaranteed to be a good RJ. You have to make the invited guest feel comfortable and entertained. If you are having a chat show, then the questions asked should be valid, entertaining, away from all the elements of the offence and must not be vague.

TRAIT #4 – Delays in Song Playing:

If the segment allotted to you is the one in which the songs are played on the real-time demands, then it is really important that you should be prepared to deal with the delays. Sometimes, the song takes some time to be hunt down or if the luck is really bad, it is unavailable. In such cases, it is important that you don’t panic and lose control. Try to ask for another song or form a proper reason for delay etc.

TRAIT #5 – Level of Talks:

Some radio channels also allow for the “audience and RJ” conversation in which the RJ is in conversation with the audience directly. There have been numerous incidents when the RJs get proposals for dates, got asked awkward questions and talked to in an offensive manner.

Learn to deal with these things. Don’t let the temper prowl on the radio channel and make the whole show a cuss session. Deal with poise and go for a polite end of the conversation no matter how bad the situation becomes.

This is all a communication skills person has to suggest for the aspiring RJs. All the comments from the experts as well as RJs are invited in the comment section.
