Movie Review: Pink is an Epic Classic

Pink Movie Review

Star Cast: Amitabh Bachchan (Deepak Sehgal), Taapsee Pannu (Minal Arora), Kirti Kulhari (Falak), Angad Bedi (Rajveer), Andrea Tariang

Director: Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury

Pink the movie is a serious, mindful cinema. A story about the double standards prevalent in society. The judgmental ones that decides a woman’s character and morality. The different yardsticks society has in place for men and women. And how cruel and name calling it can get for women if she has to fight for her own dignity against a pig-headed, powerful, rich spoilt, well-connected brat.

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury has presented it as one cult classic, an inspiring and eye-opening movie.

And it is right to say that Pink is in the league of epic classics like DDLJ, Damini, Mughal-e-Azam to name a few. Because the way these redefined the cinema, emerged and made their mark, Pink will also reign for its presentation in the hearts of all.

Pink Movie Review

The movie starts with the laughter filled casual conversations in the dark. But in a blink-of-an-eye, things took an ugly turn. The dinner invitation, the girls had gone for in good faith turn sinister post some drinks. As they saw boys trying to take advantage of the situation. And with the one grievous smash on Rajveer’s head, the night is turned even darker and silent for them.

The one they did not know will play havoc in their lives.

The boys hailing from influential family wants to play equal with girls specially Minal. The girls are called names, talked about in society. Feeling directionless, scared they see the light of hope in Deepak Sehgal, the lawyer (the patient of bipolar disorder now living his infamous shadow).

The way he proceeds with the case and proves the girls not guilty is enlightening. He brings to the surface that by no means one has the right to determine a woman’s character by the way she socializes.

The scathing questions asked from Minal about her virginity and drinking habits, in the movie evidently presented to how she and all those women who do it are perceived.

He also laid stress on women’s dignity, her modesty, her saying ‘No’ and its realization by the young educated ones.

In a very subtle and sarcastic manner gave the much thought provoking points to be pen down in woman’s safety manual. Of what all things she must not do (readily spoken about in society) if doesn’t want to be considered of low character.

His closing statement sum up that No man can lay his hands on to a woman and outrage her modesty when a woman says ‘No’ to him.

Pink is a question at the kind of mindset, the age-old double standards we are still living with. And using to decide and demean working women, or woman who drinks, or wear short clothes or parties, stays out at night.

With intense and emotion rendering perfect performance it is a bow down to the movie for the way it presented the subject.

The music is well drawn and rightly brings the helplessness and insecurity in the lives of these three girls.

Amitabh Bachchan as the lawyer Deepak Sehgal is the heart of the movie and has done a commendable job. His yet another zenith performance! The poem at the end in his baritone voice on women to make her own standing – touched the heart!

Taapsee Pannu brought the nerve wrecked yet brave girl emotions on screen effortlessly. Andrea Tariang and Kirti Kulhari too made an impactful connection with their heart touching performances. Angad Bedi, Raashul Tandon contributed greatly with their menacing and calculative double standard performance as well.
