In order to keep the instagram community safe, Instagram came up with this new feature of hiding/filtering abusive or unwanted comments and instagram explain why it is very important in their official blog. “To empower each individual, we need to promote a culture where everyone feels safe to be themselves without criticism or harassment,” said in a blog post. Instagram also state that “We are committed to keeping instagram a safe and positive place for self expression”.

This new feature has been rolled out for both Android and iOS users, and one needs to update their instagram app to use the new feature.

How to Apply the Instagram New Feature

  • Click on the gear icon at the top right side of your instagram profile 
  • Scroll down, and under the Settings tab 
  • Click on ‘Comments‘ below the Cellular Data Use 
  • You’ll see a new screen which has the option titled “Hide Inappropriate Comments”, which can be turned on or off 
  • If you turn it on it, then instagram will automatically hide comments that contain words or phrases which are often reported as offensive. 
  • Also there’s another feature when you enable “Hide Inappropriate Comments”, which enables you to add custom keywords (personal keywords), this will hide comments which contain any of the keywords that you have added. The spaced provided for custom keywords is big enough to contain any words you want to avoid on your instagram page.

This new feature comes useful at a time when social media harassment has become a serious problem. The abusive and hate comments just keep pouring in and a lot of people have chosen to delete their accounts to escape it.

There are also other new features attached to the latest update, now you can add colour to your text. Swipe the colors above the keyboard to see more, or tap and hold a circle to select a custom colour.
