From April 2015, one can book railway tickets well in advance by 4 months as compared to 2 months earlier. Indian railways constantly try to provide services which can beneficial to consumers. But they have their own limitations. The IRCTC website often gets crashed due to heavy traffic. So there are constant efforts being made by IRCTC to reduce the load on the website.
A few months back the website changed the Booking of tatkal tickets for AC and non-AC users. The new timing for booking tickets for AC classes is 10 am onwards on the previous day of journey from train originating station while the timing for non-AC classes starts at 11 am.
For booking AC seat one has to be very careful as they are very limited mainly because of quota available for VIP, railway officials, politicians etc. So one is left with the very limited number of seats. Another problem is that AC coaches are available for premium trains only like Rajdhani, Duranto and Shatabdi.
Normally Advance Reservation Period (ARP) for most trains opens at 8 am, 120 days before the train leaves the originating station. Some short distance trains have advanced reservation period of 30 days. It is always recommended to book the ticket well in advance, once the travelling date is finalised.

Nowadays, one can easily check the train PNR status online or through mobile. Nowadays, there are some mobile apps like confirmtkt.com which allows the person to check the PNR status of the train. The app also predicts the confirmation chances of the ticket. Railways have recently introduced the service of booking the ticket by sending SMS. It has been recently introduced by railways. But it has not been much of a success. Traditional medium of going personally to the railway station and booking ticket is still very popular. So one can always see the long queues near the reservation office of railways.
Apart from IRCTC, One can also book tickets through travel portals like cleartrip, makemytrip etc. The ticket rates in irctc are relatively cheaper as compared to the ticket rates in these travel portals. The problem is that the ticket rates of AC coaches are higher and instead of booking well in advance, one has the option of rather going by plane.
Cost wise there is no major difference between 1st AC ticket and plane. The advantage with the plane is that it can also reach faster. For longer distance travelling it is always suitable to compare train as well as plane ticket prices. Secondly, nowadays the cancellation charges for the tickets have also been raised to avoid people from booking and then cancelling the ticket at the last minute.
