The Yobe State government will soon award a contract for the construction of the first ever Cargo Airport in northern Nigeria.
Yobe State Commissioner for Works, Transport and Energy, Sirajo Wakil, disclosed this in Damaturu on Sunday.
He said the Airport, which would be for ticketing as well as for cargo, would be located in Damaturu, the state capital.
He lamented that Yobe was the only state among the 19 northern states of the country without an airport, adding that this informed the decision to build one.
Wakil said that the state government had concluded plans for the award of the contract for the airport.
He said when constructed, the airport would be the first of its kind in the North even as he lamented that there was no cargo airport in the whole of northern Nigeria.
He disclosed that most airports in the north were not commercially viable because they were being run on ticketing, saying that ticketing alone cannot sustain any airport.
Wakil said the cargo airport would facilitate the export of meat, dairy, among other products.
