US experts meet to boost education in Lagos

Education stakeholders, in the United States of America will converge on California, United States on Friday (today) to help to formulate strategies to enhance Education in Nigeria, using Lagos as a pilot state.
They will be joined by a team from Lagos, including the former Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs. Gbolahan Daodu,
The Performance Fact Inc. (USA) and Performance Fact Nigeria Limited are sponsoring the summit titled, “Framing a strategy for transforming educational effectiveness and outcomes for Nigerian students, especially the least well served … and doing so at scale.”
A statement by the organisers, on Thursday, said the event became necessary to support the government in providing quality education to the people.
It read, “In Lagos State – the economic capital of Nigeria – the task of educating millions of school-age children is an enormous undertaking.  While the state government has attempted to reinvest in its public schools, it has been very difficult to keep up with the infrastructural and educational needs of all the pupils in state.  The challenge will only become greater in coming years, as the state is projected to grow at the rate of about 600,000 residents per year.”
Meanwhile, the Founder, President/CEO, Performance Fact, Mr. Mutiu Fagbayi, has said that the objective of the summit was “to refine the current strategy, including how to build stronger partnerships with other organisations already engaged in the Nigerian education sector.”
The initiative, he added, would enable the participants to examine the challenges facing the sector as well as explore innovative approaches for securing long-term resources to power the mission.
Mutiu noted that the group had been working with policymakers and practitioners at the state and local levels since 2010 to improve the quality of pupils’ experiences.
He added, “We have achieved some initial successes and have learned many lessons. Now, we aim to revisit and reflect on our current roadmap, and define a coherent strategy and milestones for scaling up our work in Lagos State between 2016 and 2020.
“Therefore,  we have convened an intimate gathering of knowledgeable and committed individuals to assist us in thinking through the next evolution of Performance Fact’s mission in the Nigerian education sector, which is to  transform educational effectiveness and outcomes for Nigerian students, especially the least well served… and to do so at scale.”
The group’s Country Manager, Mrs. Tosin Babasanya-Craig, said that to ensure that the US participants clearly understood of the challenges, video interviews with key players in Lagos educational sector, including Dr. Ganiu Sopeyin, the current Lagos SUBEB chairman, and Dr. Gboyega Ilusanya of DEEPEN had been sent to the participants.
