Scientists, Lawmakers and Journalists: let us do something about these Fulani herdsmen

It is really sad and painful that these fulani herdsmen allow their cows destroy the hard labour of both old and young farmers. The cows invade the farms, eat and trample on all plant they cross on their path.

The most annoying and painful thing is they KILL innocent people just because of these cows. People and small communities are afraid of them because they know it takes nothing for these fulani herdsmen to destroy them and their homes. Even local traditional rulers are scared of them or maybe they just don't want to intervene because it's not their problem. These are leaders that are supposed to protect our right!

The day I witnessed an old couple -when I was serving with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps- cry over how these cows ate all the maize they were about to harvest the morning they came to report, they wept bitterly.

Sadly there was nothing the officers could do because these animals were not caught in the act, and by the time the officers got to the farm, there was no one to arrest.

Now, imagine the agricultural entrepreneurs who want to plant food crops to enhance sustainability in our dear country facing the threats of fulani herdsmen; they will definitely be discouraged. The worse thing is that there is nothing anyone can do about it, there is nothing (at least in the next 10 years) anyone will do about it. This is why I call on scientists, lawmakers and journalists to do something about this rising menace.

What can we do?

Scientists can produce cow repellant products which will make cows hate the plant once they smell it and will also be safe for the plants.

Lawmakers can do what they do are required to do, that is to use their intellect and power to defend our poor farmers by passing a solid bill into law that will deal with these people and their cows.

Journalists can also help spread the word and visuals and let the world see what these cows and their parents (the fulani herdsmen) are doing. Maybe someone somewhere someday will see it and be forced to do something about it.

Thank you.
