Herdsmen and their endless austerity

Herdsmen and their endless austerity remains fresh and painful always. Cattle is an important source of protein in human's diet and form a large portion of Niger and Sudan revenues. The benefits derived from cattle are numerous as it serves as food source, employment, manure, draught animals and so on. Over the years, Nigeria cattle industry has been hugely dominated by Fulanis and some Hausa in northern part of the country. We depend mainly on beef as other meats like pork are produced in microscopic amount due to religion reason while other meat like chevon, chicken and mutton are produced in small amount. Those meat mentioned are largely used for religion and ceremony purpose. Our over dependence on beef required large and sustainable commercial production to meet people demand.

Despite increase in domestic and commercial use of cattle products, there are no substantial improvements in cattle rearing compare to poultry productions where most operation have been successful automated. There are countless reasons responsible for the lack of improvements in housing, feeding and health of the animals. Though, there are many researches from animal scientists but the condition remains the same. The researches been carried out are not targeted at improving normadism and trans-humence which are the major ways of rearing cattle in Nigeria. I'm not too amazed about their target, without telling me, I know why most researchers are not targeting them. Most believe is an old method which is not in anyway conform with international standards, there is no relationship or link between them and normadists, most normadists are illiterate and some other reasons. They are not to blame for choosing otherwise.

However, animal production is a big business which requires capital. In animal production feeds accounts for 70-80 % of the production, our dear Fulani have forgotten that they need to spend money to get adequate feed for their livestock. They want feed to be zero expenses, how is dt possible. We all understand the bulk of feed consumed by ruminant is grass and a little compounded feed and premix supplement the grasses. I think our Fulani lack sound knowledge on what over grazing will result into, it is high time they realize they bring more havoc than benefits to our dear nation. It is high time they realized the importance of maintaining a perfect environment. They have forgotten there is no increase to what we don't add to. They believe, the grasses will continue to grow even if not planted abundantly. They think they will be spared when the consequences of overgrazing surface.

Unfortunately, nobody ever Imagined that one day, our farm will become source of food for their livestock, nobody ever imagined that our farmers must die for the benefit of their cattle, nobody ever imagined that one day, our women will be raped cheaply in our farms and villages, nobody ever imagined cattle rearing will involve rubbery, kidnapping and killing, nobody ever imagined, people will be chased out of their village in order to give feeding space for their cattle, nobody ever imagined that one day, farmers will vacate farm to live in hunger in urban areas, nobody ever imagined our villages will experience inferno, all in the name of Fulani cattle. To those who lost their life recently to Fulani herdsmen, Allah will give you strength to overcome that. They were showed them the other side of life on their farm. Massive killing at Agatu is still very fresh, no justice to please the deceased, no compensation to make their meaningful, no sympathy and even condolence message to them all. Is that how a unity is sustained in the country?

The best that happened after Agatu massacre that was debating grazing policy. The Agatu massacre has brought out many senseless debate and policy formation to favour the killers called rearers. The issues has brought out a reserve grazing commission which I have never heard about in the past. The herdsmen - farmer conflict is not a news in our country any more , why are they just coming out with a policy. There are plethora of options if truly they are serious. Normadism should be cancel to save life, are life of cattle important than that of men. They are selling these cattle at exorbitant rate and they are making enormous profit so why won't they build a ranch, practice rotational grazing and stay back in North. If you are protecting their cattle but not protecting our lives and crops, you are still high class morons. If you think, the southerners will continue to be a patience dog please expect brutal revenge when a puppy is harmed. You are preparing Nigerians for war if you don't murder normadism. Say no to Fulani Herdsmen austerity and be watchful always.
