Ki and Ka directed by R. Balki stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor in lead roles is an unconventional and wacky subject for a Bollywood movie because it talks about reversal of gender roles in the Indian society. Ad-maker turned director-producer Balki who has gifted us movies like Cheeni Kum, Paa, Shamitabh etc. which are based on really unconventional subjects and concepts , gives us yet another interesting Movie plot where the woman is an ambitious career woman and the man is happy playing a house husband at home.
Kia played by Kareena is an unapologetic ambitious career woman working as a marketing manager in a renowned company and believes it is always women who have to sacrifice and compromise in their marriages and therefore totally concentrates on her work and career. Things become different when she meets Kabir played by Arjun Kapoor on-board a flight and after a few meetings , they fall in love and decide to marry each other. Kabir idolizes his late mother who was a homemaker and wants to be like her. Kabir loves cooking for everyone, cleaning the house and seeing things at home. He happily agrees to let Kia pursue her dreams and career while he watches things at home. Kabir moves in with Kia and her mother, who also happens to be a working woman, after marriage in the same house and takes care of them. Kabir even attends Kitty parties comprising female members of their housing society and slowly emerges as everyone’s favourite. While Kia attends her meetings and gives presentations in office, Kabir looks after their house and cooks food. However like every marriage, their marriage also goes through a couple of hard times and tests causing problems for them. In their case , this unusual fairy-tale marriage gives rise to new unusual challenges.
The first half of the movie is breezy and introduces the characters very well. The unusual concept of a man playing a house husband does keep us intrigued and interested. Kareena Kapoor Khan is brilliant as Kia. She displays tremendous confidence in her portrayal as a modern careerist woman. It is very good to see Kareena take up a meaningful role in a movie after a long time. Arjuna Kapoor is fun to watch and deserves a special mention for taking up such an unconventional and bold role of house husband which many male stars would find difficult taking up at this stage of their careers.Kudos for that! The lead pair share a comfortable and endearing chemistry which is easy on the eyes.Swaroop Sampat and Rajit Kapoor are good in the supporting roles. However it is the second half of the movie where the screenplay nosedives and the usual Bollywood cliches, stereotypes and drama enter the movie which spoils the movie screenplay.Watch out for a brilliant cameo by Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan in the second half of the movie. The couple talk about Jaya had left her superb acting career and looked after their kids while Amitabh went and worked in his films. It is a delight watching these two talented actors onscreen even in a cameo.
A script like this definitely deserved to be made in a better movie than this. The songs in the movie are good and catchy. ‘High Heels’ , ‘Foolishq’ and ‘Ji Huzoori’ are songs which deserve special mention. Balki who has also written the script for this movie, is good in the direction department extracting the best from his cast in terms of performance but disappoints with his gibberish and sloppy script writing. However it is good to see Bollywood experimenting with such different genres. The subject had much potential but like Balki’s previous outing “Shamitabh” this also turns out to be a half baked cake. The result is that it turns out to be a strictly one time entertaining watch.
Rating :Going with two stars out of five!
