Tips On Getting Rid of Carpet Odour

Carpet Cleaning Ajax crew members know how embarrassing and unpleasant carpet odour can be. Getting rid of carpet odour can be one of the most difficult cleaning jobs you undertake, and while the best solution is to call in a professional Carpet Cleaning company, there isn’t always time. You might have a special occasion coming up or are expecting family from out of town on short notice. Whatever the reason, you definitely want that smell gone and fast. Thankfully, your Carpet Cleaning Ajax gurus have some tips to help make this difficult job a bit easier.

How To Start When Faced With A Bad Smell

Starting any difficult job is often the hardest part. When it comes to a smelly carpet, your first instinct may be to avoid the room altogether. Believe it or not, that’s actually the best first step you can take! Open the windows to give the room as much fresh air as possible. If you have fans in your house, bring them in to give the room an extra burst of air. This can help the odour dissipate a bit, making it a bit easier to tackle the next few steps. Even in the heart of winter, it’s still a good idea to give the room a burst of fresh air – just be sure you close the door and turn down the thermostat in that room to avoid wasted energy costs.

What Products Are Best For Removing Smells?

The next step is to deal with the carpet itself. Sprinkle a healthy amount of baking soda over the rug, using more if the smell is still foul even after airing out the room. Grab a broom and push the baking soda in to the fibres of the carpet to be sure you get sufficient coverage. Let it sit for a while. Ideally, you’d let it sit for at least two days, but if you’re short on time, let it sit for as long as you have. Sweep up the top layer of baking soda, and vacuum up the rest. In some cases, this will be enough to rid the carpet of it’s horrible odour. If not, repeat the process a few more times.

What To Do When Baking Soda Isn’t Enough

In some cases, baking soda alone won’t be enough to get your carpet smelling fresh. If this is the case, and if your carpet is white in colour, try using hydrogen peroxide on the smellier spots. Be careful with this step, and test a small area of your carpet first to ensure that you won’t cause discolouration.

How To Get Rid Of Stubborn Smells

If hydrogen peroxide doesn’t get rid of the smell, or if it will ruin your carpet’s appearance, try using vinegar. You can either spray it on or blot it on, depending on how much coverage you need. Don’t soak the carpet, but use a liberal amount to ensure that you reach the cause of the odour. Allow the vinegar to set in. The length of time this will take depends on how deep your carpet is, but generally speaking fifteen minutes should be enough time. Blot up the vinegar with a clean, soft cloth and follow up with cold, clean water. Be sure that you don’t let your carpet soak, as this will just cause more odour, and dry the area with another cloth. Once again, open up your windows and bring in your fans to ensure that the area gets as dry as possible. If this still doesn’t rid your carpet of its foul odour, it’s time to call in your professional carpet cleaning team.
