Liverpool should be favourites to sign Bayern Munich Star Mario Gotze in the summer transfer window, according to Jorg Jakob.
Gotze has struggled to secure a regular first-team place in Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich this season after an injury-hit campaign for the forward.
Liverpool are thought to be favourite to sign Gotze after the Bayern playmaker worked with Reds manager Klopp during his spell at Borussia Dortmund.
Klopp will return to his former employers on Thursday night when Liverpool take on Dortmund in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash.
Kicker journalist Jakob believes Liverpool are in pole position to sign Gotze should the Germany forward decide that he wants to leave Bayern at the end of the season.
“Mehmed Scholl said that Mario Gotze doesn’t work enough but after the game against Italy, Germany’s coach Joachim Low said that Gotze had been doing special training to give him a lift and my colleagues in Munich tell me that they have seen him doing special training after the normal session. People are definitely behind him,” Jakob told Liverpool Echo.
“If you asked me I’d say Gotze is leaving Munich but is he going to Liverpool or elsewhere? I’d say he’s not going back to Dortmund, that would be the wrong decision returning to an old place.
“If Carlo Ancelotti is not speaking to him in the next few weeks to say ‘you are my man, I want you in my Bayern team’ then I can imagine Liverpool being the favourites.”
The 23-year-old swapped Dortmund for Bayern in 2013 on a free transfer.
