Harassment against United States diplomats by Russian security and intelligence services is on the increase, said by United States officials.
The matter has become so pressing that it has been upraised directly with President Vladimir Putin, a United States Department of State spokeswoman said.
The difficulties began 2 years ago following United States-imposed prohibitions over the Ukraine crisis, she added.
Specific events have not formally been revealed.
But the Washington Post said they involved breaking into the homes of embassy staff, reordering furniture and even murder a family pet.
No official reply has been made by Russia but a declaration to the Post did not deny the charge and said there had been United States hassle against Russian envoys.
The ex- United States ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, told the media that while his family was living in Moscow they were regularly followed by security services that required him to know they were being watched.
He said that events increased after the United States and European Union imposed sanctions on Russian leaders following the invasion of Crimea and ongoing Russian connection in the conflict in Ukraine.
“After the incursion of Ukraine, it got much, much worse,” Mr McFaul told famous media.
“We were feeling plagued out there in the embassy,” he said.
