Vincent D’Onofrio is one of those actors who owns the scene, no matter how big of a role he plays. In the movie, Full Metal Jacket, he went from torturous vulnerability to menacing psycho on the turn of a dime. He played Private Pyle, an overweight, unfit recruit who became the scorn of his superior officer, who tried every way possible to step on his dignity. That sets up the scene below. It’s no surprise that this is the role that launched his career.
One of D’Onofrio’s defining roles was his portrayal of Detective Robert Goren in the television series Law and Order Criminal Intent. It is a Sherlock Holmes/Columbo-type character who agitates and unnerves perpetrators into confession during his investigations. As confident as Goren was in the interrogation room, outside of it he was sensitive and exposed. It’s a role he might have been able to retire with had he not left the show, reportedly due to exhaustion.
More recently, D’Onofrio has joined the Marvel family and taken Netflix by storm as Daredevil‘s nemesis Wilson Fisk. In this role he plays a devilish gangster who is both brooding and chilling at the same time. The actor describes the role in the clip below.
Vincent D’Onofrio has stepped well beyond his roles in movies and television. He has worked in both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. He sings, too.
He has been involved in numerous film boards and organizations. He teaches a master class at The Lee Strasburg Theatre and Film Institute.
This tidbit might be hard to swallow, though. He actually passed up a role in the television series The Sopranos. Can you imagine that show being even better with him in it?
Meanwhile, D’Onofrio is very active in social media (vincentdonofrio on Twitter and Instagram; officialvincentdonofrio on Facebook) and engages with his fans every day.
