Controlled explosion, delays kick off summer games

Tourists greet the Summer 2016 Rio Olympics with optimism despite a rash of concerns, including long delays at lines that prompted officials to apologize and heightened security after a bomb squad detonates a suspicious package. Gavino Garay reports.

It’s been a rocky start to the first day of the Games after the colorful opening ceremony in Rio.

The city was already on high alert when a bomb squad carried out a Controlled Explosion of a suspicious backpack near the finishing line of the men’s cycling road race.

Earlier in the day, visitors faced long lines and some even missed events they had bought tickets for, prompting an official apology from the IOC.

But many tourists remain upbeat and are enjoying the ‘Carioca’ way of life, despite concerns over the mosquito-born Zika virus and the long delays.

“So far I’ve loved it, I love the weather, I loved the opening ceremony last night was amazing and I just love it. You’ve just got to allow more time to get to the venues I think, we didn’t anticipate that but it’s been great.”

IOC spokesman Mark Adams conceded they had glitches, but said they were not unlike similar problems at previous Olympics and would soon be fixed.

The athletes aren’t letting the hick-ups distract them.

Teenager Virginia Thrasher from team U.S.A. became the first to win a gold medal at the Rio Games, in the women’s 10m air rifle event… proving these Olympians are here to compete.
