Ukrainians in rebel-held east line up for taste of U.S.

The language may be Russian, but the Taste is 100 percent Western.

Two years after turmoil in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine forced the McDonald’s Restaurant to close its doors,

Customers are now lining to get into the new Don-Mak restaurant.

A restaurant spokeswoman says the owners just wanted to give people a taste of the past.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) CHIEF ACCOUNTANT AT DONMAK RESTAURANT, LIUDMILA SMOTRINA, SAYING:

“We opened for the people, so they could recall the taste of McDonald’s and could come here every day.”

The owners say they’ve tried to mimic the look and taste of the fast food chain’s food as much as possible.

And the verdict?

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) DONATES RESIDENT, MACHISMO, SAYING:

“It is more tasty than McDonald’s, a hundred percent more tasty. Or maybe it seems that way because I have not tasted it in a while.”

It was turmoil over whether Ukraine should cultivate closer ties with Russia or the west that triggered the 2014 revolution in the country,

Donetsk is currently controlled by rebels aligned with Russia.

But in this line…American-style burgers are ruling the day.
