Dozens dead in Azerbaijan clashes

A new wave of Clashes has broken out in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region, killing Dozens of people. Yiming Woo reports.

Dozens of people are dead after a new wave of fighting broke out in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

Both sides accuse each other of violating a 1994 ceasefire agreement put in place after the Soviet Union broke up.

Nagorno-Karabakh is inside Azerbaijan but is controlled by ethnic Armenians.

Azerbaijan frequently threatens to take it back by force.

On Saturday, the Azeri army said it “liberated strategic settlements” there and destroyed six Armenian tanks.

David Babayan, from the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh Republic:

“It was a clear violation of the ceasefire regime, the international law, the international humanitarian law and the Geneva conventions, because whatever official Baku has done in the zone of Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict was a conspicuous manifestation of terrorism and anti-Armenian policy.”

Armenian forces also shot down an Azeri helicopter.

Worries are growing that the clashes will spread in the region rich with oil and natural gas.
