Pope decrys corruption and drug trade in Mexico

Pope Francis rails against political Corruption and drug trafficking when he meets with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto during his five-day tour of Mexico. Diane Hodges reports.

On his first full day in Mexico, Pope Francis launches a broadside against government corruption.

Less than 24 hours after arriving in the country, the head of the Catholic church met with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and delivered a message.

“Each time we seek the path of privilege or benefit for the few society becomes fertile ground for corruption, the Drug Trade, the exclusion of different cultures, the violence and also human trafficking, kidnapping and killing.”

Pena Nieto, his wife and finance minister have all been embroiled in conflict of interest scandals involving homes purchased from government contractors.

But the Mexican President spoke of the Pope’s vision.

“We see in you a sensitive and visionary leader. We know you as the Reformer Pope who is taking the Catholic Church to the people.”

Thousands converged on Mexico City´s historic center to hear the pontiff address the government at the presidential palace.

Some waited for hours, in hopes that Francis can help heal some of the country’s wounds.

“Incredible. It is an emotion that I cannot describe. We were here since two in the morning, here waiting for a good spot to get as close as possible. The atmosphere, the people, everything full of love, incredible. That is what we need now for Mexico.”

During his five-day trip, Francis will visit some of Mexico’s poorest and most violent corners, places where that love is desperately needed.
