The Japan Food Town finally opened today at Isetan Orchard in Wisma Atria Singapore. One of the more attractive restaurants that was open was sushi restaurant, Tsukiji Takewaka Singapore. It was nice to have a welcoming party greeting visitors as they enter the restaurant. The Tsukiji Takewaka Sushi restaurant was the first restaurant that we tried in this Japanese food paradise on Orchard Road as we figured that any sushi restaurant that has been in business at the famous Tsukiji Market in Tokyo for the past 30 years must be worth trying. We will do a general overview of what we saw in the Wisma Atria Japan Food Town in our next post.
The Japan Food Town is supposed to provide an authentic Japanese dining experience for different types of Japanese cuisines. So it was no surprise that the decor of the Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka Singapore restaurant was laid out in classic Japanese restaurant style. Bright, pleasant and fuss free. The light wood furniture lends a warm atmosphere to the place.
Probably because it was opening day, only a short lunch menu was available. Six types of sushi platters or rice bowls (chirashi) were available. We decided on the two basic ones – Edomae Nigri Sushi and a Gekimori Chirashi Sushi ($14.40 each). Both of the items come with chawanmushi, miso soup and dessert.
For future reference, here are pictures of the ala carte sushi price list and a couple of pages from the main menu.
The Gekimori Chirashi Sushi was a beautiful bowl of rice topped with bits of raw fish, vegetables and fish eggs. There were other ingredients such as sesame seeds and other condiments that we cannot identify. We can just say that this was a very good tasting bowl of chirashi, which looked too beautiful to be messed up by eating it.
The nigiri sushi was more staid looking. At $14.40 for the whole meal we were not expecting premium sushi and that was the case. The raw fish did not have the translucency or sheen of top grade sushi nor any complex taste. But this was good basic sushi that was value for money. To try sushi or chirashi with better grades of fish, select the items on the menu with the word “Jo”.
Each of the meals was served with soup, chawanmushi and watermelon for dessert. The chawanmushi deserves mention for being very good. Smooth and complex tasting, we did not expect to find this quality in a $14.40 meal. Overall, Tsukiji Takewaka Singapore has brought to Orchard Road authentic sushi at different price points, which is something to be welcomed.
