AUDIO: Phil & Friends Smoke Lockn’ with Dead Classics, Like “Sugaree”

Phil Lesh & Friends held court at Lockn’ this past Saturday – and the resulting setlist and high-quality play built a bonafide jubilee for Deadheads amid the meadows of Arrington, VA. The crowd enjoyed classics, like “Scarlet Begonias,” “Mr. Charlie,” “Sugaree” and “Terrapin Station.” It felt a little like the good ole days.

Lesh, the festival’s sole Dead representative (so much for the Core Four), was joined onstage by a parade of A-list musicians, like blueswoman Susan Tedeschi, slide-guitar wiz Derek Trucks, dynamic duo Jon Fishman and Page McConnell of Phish, members of The Infamous Stringdusters, drummer Joe Russo (JRAD) and guitarist Anders Osborne.

Here’s “Sugaree” with the incomparable Susan Tedeschi, all dressed in green, on lead vocals. Derek’s slide guitar will give you goose bumps. And did I mention Jon Fishman and Page McConnell joined in? Now that’s a truckload of talent up onstage.

Here’s the audio of Phil’s stellar first set on Saturday, August 27th at Lockn’. It’s all good, but please don’t miss “Scarlet Begonias,” “Rosalee McFall,” “Mr. Charlie” (despite the fact that Susan T pulls a Garcia in the first verse) or the bomber “Terrapin” closer (the jams are sweet).
