Since a new version of Jumanji was announced as in development, movie-goers have been divided over whether or not they actually want to see a reboot. Well, we have some good news for those against the idea of a Jumanji reboot. According to Dwayne Johnson, the movie won’t be a reboot after all.
Johnson, who just completed work on Fast 8, shared an instagram post thanking members of the cast and crew for their work on the project, but he also wrote a little bit about what’s next for him, and what we can expect from Jumanji. He called the upcoming Film a “continuation” of the story, which sounds more like a sequel than it is a reimagining of the same story.
The original film, which starred Robin Williams, saw something of a timeline reset at the end of the story as the children playing the game completed it, putting everything back to the way it was supposed to be. The game itself was disposed of, though not destroyed. Perhaps a new group of kids will discover the game in the modern day.
The film already has a continuation story, technically speaking. Zathura is set in the same movie universe as Jumanji. While Jumanji took kids on an adventure with animals from the jungle, Zathura was set in outer space, leading to a whole new set of problems for the main characters.
Also confirmed in Johnson’s instagram post is that he’ll be appearing in the film with Kevin Hart and Jack Black. While both actors have been reported as being “in talks” for the film in the past, nothing official had confirmed their involvement. All three are known for their comedy chops, and for having a mixture of films in their background that appeal to the kids and the adults in the audience, so the three of them together should provide for an interesting combination. Johnson didn’t confirm whether or not Nick Jonas officially signed on to the film, though he was also in consideration.
Hart and Johnson most recently appeared together in the action comedy Central Intelligence.
