Costume Design- The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is one of those classics that people still talk about and remake and I don’t thing anyone is going to get tired of this anytime soon. The last remake came out in 2013. It had to be one of the highest anticipated Movie I have seen. It stared everyone’s favorite Leonardo DeCapri ,Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan and many more but I think the movies yelling for Oscars already. And this film did win both the awards it was nominated for. Sadly it was another movie that Leonardo dint get an Oscar for. The movie won Oscars for Production design and Costume Design. The film was shot in Australia so all the sets were created at Sydney’s Fox Studios. From the Gatsby’s mansion with its ballroom, library, grotto and pool to the Plaza’s suite. All was created specially for the film. The costume designing was done by Catherine Martin who was the director Baz Luhrmann’s wife. So not only was she the costume designer but also the producer, production designer and someone who made sure that whatever Baz did was right. She and her husband would fight in the professional world. When asked about it she explained that her mother always said that “a fight is a good thing because at least you’re expressing your opinion and care enough to try and engage the other person into agreeing with you.” Baz and Catherine have been working together since 1992 since his first big success “Strictly Ballroom”. She is a partner in Bazmark, Mr Luhrmanns company, the designer.

Making the Costumes for this movie was rather daunting as they had to be right. There were the party scenes which were the most critical of the lot as costumes had to be made for up-to 300 extras and each had to be unique in its own way. Catherine Martin partnered with Brooks Brothers who provided 1200 costumes and that’s just for the men of the movie. Miuccia Prada even helped out on the woman’s side and the Miu Miu and Prada Archive were dug out for inspirations ad styles. Miuccia help design up-to 40 costumes that were worn by Carey Mulligan. Baz and Miuccia would connect on their shared fascination with finding modern ways releasing classic and historical references from the shackles of the past. The designs took the form of shimmering dresses, covered with fringing, crystals, and sequins, in shades of jade, emerald, gold and topaz. Fabrics come in luxurious velvet’s and furs, with the story’s Twenties setting at the heart of each and every style. Never before has the line ‘Damn that’s some Nice tailoring’ seemed more appropriate. Gatsby’s clothes perfectly fit with that perception of a man playing a role, especially for one with a walking stick. There were a lot of double breasted suits and double breasted suites give one an impression of power and are often worn by villains or gangsters and we saw Meyer Wolfsheim sporting just those through out the movie. Carey’s Body was perfect for the setting as her body shape is one from the 20s. The jewelry used in the movie was all sponsored by Tiffany. Carey was over whelmed and noted that all these little details helped her set into the mood of the character more. She even noted that all the jewelry she wore was worth many millions. The actress said “There’d be diamond bracelets on each arm, and diamond earrings, and rings, and strings of pearls around my neck. And I could see this guy in the corner watching me intently, in case I ran off with anything.”

Overall if one doesn’t wish to watch it for the story, they should definitely watch it for the Costumes and the Production design.
