The Academy Awards always makes the headlines – both in the world of movies and across the general media. But the 2016 Oscars was certainly one of the most political and controversial to date. Talks of a mass boycott, a walkout and a protest had organisers a little uneasy going into this year’s awards – but, for the most part, everything went as well as could have been expected.
There were so many interesting Talking Points and events at the 88th Academy Awards, and here are 10 of the most fascinating.
9. Leonardo DiCaprio broke his Oscars duck
After five nominations without a win, Leonardo Dicaprio finally won the award for Best Actor with his incredible performance in The Revenant.
But rather than revel in the spotlight, Leo decided to use the stage at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles to talk about climate change.
He said:
“It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”
8. Chris Rock delivered perhaps the greatest ever performance by an Oscars host
Chris Rock had been urged by several high-profile people within the industry to boycott the Oscars – but he decided that it was best to fight prejudice and subliminal racism from within.
Rock delivered a number of scathing remarks aimed at the lack of diversity within Hollywood.
He said:
“Jada’s mad: her man Will was not nominated for Concussion, I get it. It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West.”
