Louis Van Gaal has spent most of the time making excuses and spitting poison at journalists. But it now seems that even the stroppy Dutchman himself has seen the light.
Talking to BT Sport after the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland, van Gaal admitted that his side had underperformed. He also conceded that Manchester United’s best chance of securing a Champions’ League place next season.
The under-pressure Manchester United manager said:
“You have to win we can only blame ourselves. Sunderland have had more aggression and we could not cope with that aggression.
“It shall be very difficult now. We give five points away… Chelsea and here. It is too much.
“I think after this match it’s the best route but it’s not so easy as a lot of very good teams are participating in this event.”
There can surely be no way back for van Gaal now. Not only his is hugely expensive team not getting results, the style of play is just doing it for United fans. The Dutchman’s former pupil Jose Mourinho is waiting in the wings to take over. And on this evidence, the odds of the Portuguese manager taking over before the end of the season will be shortening.
