BB-8 Originally Had Dialogue in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

One of the unexpected stars of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the cute android BB-8.

The scene in which the little robot gives the thumbs up with a flame drew one of the biggest laughs in the entire movie. But BB-8’s role in the movie could have been so much bigger if an earlier script had been used.

Ben Schwartz and Bill Hader were described as ‘BB-8 consultants’, and Schwartz recently revealed that J.J. Abrams initial wish was for the droid to have a ‘real personality’ and use ‘real dialogue’. Indeed, the Dialogue was used to piece together certain scenes. So, does this mean that the actors were able to react to BB-8’s dialogue?

Did a real actor become the voice of BB-8? It would be great to hear the voice Schwartz and Hader chose. Perhaps we’ll find out in the DVD’s special features section.

Watch Ben Schwartz talk about the creation of BB-8’s voice for Star Wars: The Force Awakens here.
