The new Top Gear line-up has been released by the BBC, and it is something of a huge anti-climax.
We already knew that Chris Evans would be joined by Matt LeBlanc and The Stig, and rumours were rife that former Formula One boss Eddie Jordan would be involved. So when the BBC launched their new team, the collective groan of the nation was almost audible.
Sabine Schmitz is a German driver who has been on the show several times over the years. She will become the first female presenter on Top Gear in most than 15 years.
Chris Harris is a car and tech reviewer, and Rory Reid is a respected motoring journalist who won a public vote to be included on the new team.
So, we now have a presenting team of six. Is this too many? Of course it is. The new show will undoubtedly lack the charm and personal touch that made Clarkson’s Top Gear so special.
Chris Evans may be wacky and zany, but he isn’t funny – neither by design or by accident. Eddie Jordan has never anchored a show before, and the other three will take a few months to find their feet.
This is a new motoring show, so comparisons to what went before will be futile. But with so many cooks involved, the Top Gear broth is in danger of becoming very salty indeed.
