True Blood

The Show “True Blood” Cast, Pictures, And Trivia

This series is about a fictional town by the name of Bon Temps, in the state of Louisiana, which is home to both humans and vampires who manage to live together in a state of coexistence after the revelation that vampires do indeed exist on national television.

This is able to be accomplished due to the invention of something called “Tru Blood”, a synthetic Blood that makes it possible for vampires to “come out of the coffin” without requiring human blood to survive. And like most situations, this “Great Revelation” has two sides. The first is the group of vampires who want very much to integrate themselves into the normal human society or “mainstream”. The second is the group who think that it is simply not possible for humans and vampires to live together due to the intrinsically uncontrollable and violent sides of their personalities.

The show started out with one central character, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress who is also a human-faerie hybrid that can read people’s minds. Other members of the main cast included, Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley), Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten), Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard), Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis) Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer), Hoyt Fortenberry (Jim Parrack), Lettie Mae Daniels (Adina Porter), Arlene Fowler Bellefleur (Carrie Preston), Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll), Pam De Beaufort (Kristin Bauer van Straten), Terry Bellefleur (Todd Lowe), Holly Cleary (Lauren Bowles), Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello), and Sheriff Bud Dearborne (William Sanderson).

Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin)-Sookie is a waitress who works at “Merlotte’s Bar and Grill” and is a human-faerie hybrid with the ability to read people’s minds. This may sound like an interesting prospect, but for Sookie, it presents more of a problem than anything else. She hears every single thought of every person that she encounters, including those that she would prefer not to hear and although it also gives her a certain intuitiveness about people, she would often just enjoy being able to turn off this tremendous power. There is, however, one group of “people” whose thoughts she cannot read and they are those belonging to the vampires. This makes her inherently drawn to them for several reasons and they in turn, are drawn to her as well. The main reason for this is because of the amazing scent that she gives off, which to a vampire is absolutely irresistible. Her best friend is Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) and her brother is Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten). Sookie is brave and independent and despite the many things that have happened to her throughout her life, she is honest and forthright.

Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer)-Bill is a vampire who manages to maintain the gentlemanly airs of centuries past. Born in 1835, he was happily married with two children and on his way home from the Civil War, when his life was changed forever after being turned into a vampire by a supposed widow named, Lorena. After that, unable to return to his former life, Bill does his best to maintain a somewhat higher standard of what he considers to be a vampire’s interpretation of what is right and wrong. For instance, when he finds it necessary to feed upon a human, he makes every effort not to kill them and instead does something called “glamouring” or hypnotizing them, in order for them to forget the incident. This is also a power that he uses in order to get people do things that he wants as well. Also, Bill, unlike most vampires, seems to have a higher tolerance for spending time in the sunlight and is very strong for a vampire his age. He is also responsible for turning teenager, Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll) into a vampire against his will as a punishment from Magister, the enforcer of vampire law. This punishment was presented due to Bill’s killing of another vampire.

Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell)-Sam is the owner of the bar and grill where Sookie is employed and is also what is known as a shapeshifter. This means that he has the ability to take the form of any animal that he chooses, although he does have a preference for becoming a collie. And also like most shapeshifters, though he can take different forms whenever he chooses, when a full moon is present his urge to change is much greater. Sookie is a close friend of Sam, although his feelings for her are not that simple. He has deep romantic feelings for her as well, which makes him incredibly protective of her, much to her vampire boyfriend’s annoyance. Sam does not at first know much about his birth family as he was adopted, but later learns more about them.

Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley)-Tara is the best and lifelong friend of Sookie. Having known each other since they were children and bonding over the fact that they were both outcasts of society, though for different reasons. Sookie, of course, for her ability to read minds and Tara because of her abusive and alcoholic mother, Lettie Mae (Adina Porter) Due to the constant abuse that Tara has suffered throughout her life, she has a lot of difficulty when it comes to dealing with most people, even in a very general way, which also makes it hard for her to hold down any kind of job for long. Her cousin is Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis), and one of the few people to whom Tara is close. Both work for a time at Merlotte’s bar and while Tara does not hold this or any job long, she is very intelligent and quite strong willed.

Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten)-Jason is the brother of the mind-reading Sookie, the supervisor of a road crew and a true ladies’ man. Not particularly bright, he tends to get into trouble often and is also very easily manipulated; however, he usually manages to evade a bad end due to his dumb luck or last minute, quick thinking. His personality is addictive, which is also something that makes him easier to manipulate in a situation. But on the other hand, despite his strong urge for sexual encounters and his relative ease at getting into bad situations, he is also very loyal, especially to his sister, Sookie. He feels that his duty is to protect her no matter what.

Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard)-Eric is a vampire who is over 1,000 years old, which gives him incredibly strong powers as well as strength. He also has the ability to move faster than the eye can see. And though he can show extreme violence, he can also show great loyalty as well, especially to his Maker, Godric. He can be quite affectionate and has a generous sense of humor, which is rather unusual considering normal vampire nature. He is the Vampire Sheriff of Louisiana’s Area 5 and also owns “Fangtasia”, a well-known vampire bar. Unlike others who have become vampires in one way or another, Eric actually revels in the joys that being a vampire brings, taking pleasure in being undead as well as the numerous other benefits, especially the ones involving sex.

Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis)-Lafayette is the obviously gay cousin of Tara Thornton and the short order cook at Merlotte’s Grill. In addition, he also works on the road crew of Jason Stackhouse and deals drugs as well as vampire blood on the side. Despite his rather dark sense of humor and illegal doings, Lafayette is actually quite a good person at heart. He will go to great lengths to help his cousin, Tara, as well as close friends, with any problems they may be having, although he has great difficulty in admitting it. He is wonderful when it comes to sharing make-up tips, loves scarves, lots of jewelry, wearing false eyelashes and midriff baring shirts, and is also a shameless flirt.

Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer)-Andy is a police detective in the town of Bon Temps, who usually feels as if he does not get the respect that should be given to him. This is due partially to the fact that he comes from a wealthy family and grew up somewhat spoiled and partly because he is often not very competent at his job. He, unlike many citizens of the town, does not hold a prejudice towards vampires, werewolves or shape-shifters, nor is he racist like so many in the town, which, considering his upbringing, is actually rather odd. His cousin is Terry Bellefleur (Todd Lowe).

Hoyt Fortenberry (Jim Parrack)-Hoyt is the best friend of Jason Stackhouse and they work on the road crew together. A truly sweet and kind individual, he is unprejudiced when it comes to vampires and is the only person whose thoughts actually remain good and kindhearted. He is rather shy when it comes to women; however, so beginning a relationship with one is something that he takes very seriously. So much so that he is still a virgin at nearly 30 years old. He has been cowed by his domineering mother, Maxine Fortenberry (Dale Rauol) all of his life, and in fact still lives with her. Due to this, he has not exactly been able to become a fully formed adult, which tends to make him somewhat impressionable.

Lettie Mae Daniels (Adina Porter)-Lettie Mae is the alcoholic and abusive mother of Tara Thornton. Lettie Mae believes that the reason for her problems have to do with having a devil inside of her soul and begs her daughter to help her get rid of it by helping her to get an exorcism. Unfortunately, after finding God, she becomes very, very pious and increasingly judgmental about people. She has a sister named, Ruby Jean, who is currently undergoing treatment in a mental clinic for schizophrenia and cannot seem to form a loving or secure relationship with her daughter no matter what the circumstances.

Arlene Fowler Bellefleur (Carrie Preston)-Arlene is a friend of Sookie’s and also works with her as a waitress at Merlotte’s Bar and Grill. She is a kind person, although she does have a prejudice against vampires. She is spunky and says what she thinks, even when this could possibly hurt someone else. She has been married four times and has two children. Despite other flaws in her personality, Arlene’s love for her children is completely pure and runs very deep. Her children are her world and she would do anything for them. She also seems to have the powers of a medium, although only to a mild extent.

Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll)-Jessica was turned into a vampire by Bill Compton, who was required to do it as his punishment for killing another vampire. Her life now is completely the opposite of how Jessica was raised. She grew up in a devout Christian family with little contact with the outside world, as she and her sister, Eden, were homeschooled and she was allowed to go out only for Bible study and her clarinet lessons. Not only this, but her father especially, was very strict and would often beat her with a belt as punishment. She became very rebellious due to this treatment and was in a particularly rebellious phase when she was turned into a vampire. Because Bill was the one to turn her, he must as her maker, also teach her how to live as a vampire. Unfortunately, she tends to get on his nerves. She has a real gift for glamouring and is even able to glamour two people at one time.

Pam De Beaufort (Kristin Bauer van Straten)-Pam is a vampire and is the progeny of Eric Northman. She works as a sort of bouncer at his vampire bar, “Fangtasia”. Not a particularly kind person, she is rude and calculating and only has the happiness of herself and Eric in mind. Although they no longer have a sexual relationship and have not had one in decades, she still becomes very jealous whenever Eric is involved with someone else, and always wants his time to be spent with her. Despite the fact that she is considered young for a vampire, she is second in command of area 5 and serves as Eric’s deputy. Born in the late 1800’s, she grew up to be a madam who ran a brothel until forcing Eric to turn her into a vampire. She is drawn more to women than men, with the exception of Eric and thinks that vampires are far superior to humans.

Terry Bellefleur (Todd Lowe)-Terry is the cousin of Andy and a veteran of the Iraq war. Due to his heavy involvement in the war, he now suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). He works at Merlotte’s Bar and Grill as a cook and is just trying to put his life back together again and be happy. He is a kind, honest and very hard-working man but cannot seem to forget or forgive himself for the actions that he committed during the war. Those who are close to him, however, know him to be loyal and loving with a big heart and an aptitude for leadership.

Holly Cleary (Lauren Bowles)-Holly is a waitress at Merlotte’s Bar and Grill but with one special quality, she is also a witch. She is divorced from an abusive alcoholic and has two sons, Wade and Rocky whom she loves unconditionally. A loving and very caring person, she will always do what she thinks is right, but does not believe in using her magic to do harm.

Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello)-Alcide is a werewolf who along with his werewolf father owns a construction company. He also has one sibling, a sister named Janice. Unlike most other werewolves, Alcide is quite capable of controlling his animalistic side and is kind, loyal and moral. He also has tremendous strength and can shift from human form into werewolf form at sheer will, with the exception of the nights when the moon is full and he shifts spontaneously. He also has an incredible sense of smell even when only in human form. Alcide’s family owes a debt to vampire Eric Northman, which he has taken the responsibility of re-paying. And due to being raised in a female-focused were society, Alcide has a tremendous respect for women, although the downside of this is that this also makes him quite vulnerable to their various manipulations. When in his wolf form he has bright orange eyes and white fur with some light brown spots.

Sheriff Bud Dearborne (William Sanderson)-Bud is the sheriff or Renard Parish, a fairly level-headed man who tries to do his job properly, which includes keeping his deputy Andy Bellefleur from going overboard any time that he gets a hunch. He has a problem with vampires and is very vocal about it and also enjoys square dancing.

My Opinion

This show was unique in that it was always on the cutting edge and never afraid to create stories that would shock it’s loyal viewers. Wonderful actors, incredible costumes and make-up and fascinating storylines, make this show well worth watching. I give it 8 out of 10.

Trivia

The series, “True Blood”, is based on the series of novels written by Charlaine Harris entitled, “The Southern Vampire Mysteries”.

Anna Paquin’s (Sookie Stackhouse) first film role ever, was in the movie “The Piano”, for which she later won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the age of only 11. This makes her the second youngest winner in Oscar history, coming in only behind actress Tatum O’Neal for her performance in the movie, “Paper Moon”.

Stellan Skarsgard, who is the father of actor, Alexander Skarsgard (Eric Northman), was also offered a role on the show but could not accept as he was unavailable.

In order to shoot the title sequence, the production crew spent a total of 4 days shooting in Louisiana, Chicago and Seattle. They received permission to shoot people’s homes or just stopped their cars anywhere they happened to see something that they liked. The man in the rocking chair for example, actually had a few beers with the crew after they received permission to film him.

Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) was born in England and graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

The series lasted for a total of seven seasons.

Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton) graduated from Juilliard in May of 2005.

Anna Paquin married True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer on August 21, 2010. The two began dating during the filming of the series’ pilot episode in 2007. The two have a set of fraternal twins, Charlie and Poppy, born in September of 2012. Moyer also has two children from a previous marriage, Billy and Lilac.

Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte) is the only member of the entire cast who is actually from Louisiana, which is where the series is set.

Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was the captain of the football, volleyball and basketball teams. He also went on to play at the varsity level in all three sports. He is also a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Alan Ball, who was the series creator, became interested in Harris’s books when he came upon the book, “Dead Until Dark”, which was the first installment in the series.

Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds) attended Juilliard, where he met future True Blood co-star, Rutina Wesley.

True Blood’s opening title sequence ranked fifth on a list of “TV’s Top 10 Credits Sequences” by readers, in a 2010 issue of “TV Guide”.

Lauren Bowles (Holly Cleary) is the younger, half-sister of “Seinfeld” actress, Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The scenes that take place at the vampire bar, “Fangtasia”, were filmed at a bar in Long Beach, California called, “Alex’s Bar”.

Like several other of her True Blood co-stars, Carrie Preston (Arlene Fowler Bellefleur) also attended Juilliard.

Because of the fact that vampires are supposed to be scarred by silver, Russell Edgington’s table was therefore set with gold flatware instead of the traditional silver.

Todd Lowe (Terry Bellefleur) graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In between acting jobs, Lowe also worked as a substitute teacher.

Alexander Skarsgard has been named “The Sexiest Man” in Sweden a total of five times.

Jim Parrack (Hoyt Fortenberry) is friends with fellow actor, James Franco.

Music was an important part of the series and two True Blood soundtrack albums have earned Grammy Award nominations. Also, the show’s individual episode titles are actually named after songs that are at some point, displayed in a portion of that particular show.

Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse) was born in Sydney, Australia.

Chris Bauer (Andy Bellefleur) graduated from the Yale School of Drama.

One year after the show’s debut on HBO, HBO.com began to sell a drink called, “Tru:Blood”. This beverage was, of course, supposed to resemble the fictional synthetic blood, “Tru Blood” which is one of the major pieces of the series’ storyline. It was a carbonated blood orange-flavored drink that was manufactured as well as developed by a company called, “Omni Consumer Products”. At the same time, a True Blood jewelry line was also launched in collaboration with popular New York-based designer, Udi Behr. The jewelry was inspired by the series and has a somewhat Gothic look to it, the pieces mostly being made of sterling silver, rubies and polished steel.

During Nelsan Ellis’ time at Juilliard he wrote a semi-autobiographical play based on the murder of his pregnant sister, Alice, by her husband, called “Ugly”.  He received the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ Martin E. Segal Award.

Though Adina Porter (Lettie Mae Daniels) plays the mother to Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton) on True Blood, in reality, she is only seven years older than Wesley.

On August 9, 2011, Sam Trammell and his girlfriend, Missy Yager, had twin boys, Gus and Winston.

Photographs of both the cast and crew are seen hanging behind the bar at “Merlotte’s Bar and Grill”.

Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica Hamby) has suffered from Celiacs disease since she was an infant. This is a condition that makes her body intolerant of absorbing gluten.

So popular was the show, that a total of six comics were made. The first was released in July 2010, with a print run of 53,000 and very quickly sold out.

Originally, the part of Tara Thornton was given to actress Brook Kerr, however, after two episodes were filmed, she was instead replaced with actress Rutina Wesley. All of the scenes containing Kerr were then re-shot.

William Sanderson (Sheriff Bud Dearborne) served in the United States Army for two years.

Anna Paquin came out as a bisexual in a 2010 public service announcement for the “Give a Damn” campaign. When Paquin was asked about her participation, she simply said, “It wasn’t like it was a big secret, it was just a cause I cared about and privately supported, but not one that I had ever had an opportunity to speak out about in a way that would be useful. Obviously I know that one person’s voice doesn’t necessarily do that much, but I just wanted to do my bit.”

Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam De Beaufort) does much conservation work in order to improve how animals are treated. She has many rescued animals living with her in her home and in 2011, van Straten teamed up with the Animal Legal Defense Fund, so that a 10-year-old Siberian-Bengal tiger named Tony, could be freed.

Stephen Moyer married co-star Anna Paquin in August of 2010.

In 2013, Alexander Skarsgard participated in a fund raising event for wounded soldiers called, “Walking with the Wounded”. Skarsgard was the US Ambassador for the American team and trekked to the South Pole against Team Canada/Australia and Team UK, whose ambassador was Prince Harry. Due to hazardous terrain and severe weather conditions, the competition part of the race was cancelled. The teams then decided to combine forces and continue. On December 13, 2010, Skarsgard, Prince Harry and several wounded soldiers reached their goal and made it to the South Pole.

Todd Lowe plays with childhood friend, James Ellis Lane, in a band called Pilbilly Knights.

Joe Manganiello and “Modern Family” actress, Sofia Vergara, became engaged in 2014, on Christmas Day.

The exteriors used for the mansion home of the Vampire King of Mississippi, Russell Edgington, were filmed on location at the registered National Historic Landmark of Longwood, a mansion located in Natchez, Mississippi. In addition to being a landmark, Longwood is also unique due to its octagonal structure that was, at that time, unknown in the region, it’s onion-shaped dome on the top of its tower and the fact that it was never completed because of the occurrence of the Civil War, which was during the time of the home’s construction. The family that commissioned the home was never able to live in the main part and instead simply furnished the basement area.

A large portion of the main cast happens to be actors who are originally from outside of the United States. Series creator, Alan Ball, said in an interview that he did not intentionally look for “non-American” actors but was willing to go wherever he had to in order “to find the actor who makes the character breathe”. He also said that it was less important that the actors closely resembled the character’s in the book but more important that they were able to play the characters in an irresistible way instead.

Surprisingly, True Blood was actually the basis for a “Sesame Street” sketch in 2010, called “True Mud”. There are puppet versions of the characters, Sookie, Bill, Sam, Tara, Lafayette and Sheriff Dearborne.

Originally, Alexander Skarsgard auditioned for the role of not Eric Northman but Bill Compton.

Chris Bauer and True Blood co-star Kristen Bauer van Straten are not related.

Anna Paquin played in the movie, “Fly Away Home” in 1996, as the daughter of Jeff Daniels. Then, nine years later in 2005, she played in the movie, “The Squid and the Whale” as the romantic interest of Jeff Daniels.

The author of the novels, Charlaine Harris, actually makes a cameo in the Season 2 finale.

Each time that Kristen Bauer van Straten (Pam De Beaufort) is forced to speak in Swedish, she begins panicking.

Joe Manganiello was in the film, “Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia” and trained with a former Navy SEAL in order to prepare for his role. The studio did not, however, provide this service, so when Manganiello heard this, he flew in a former SEAL trainer of his own to the set, which was in Puerto Rico, and put him up at the same hotel as the cast, and paid for everything out of his own pocket.

“Lou Pine’s” is the name of the werewolf hangout and bar, and is actually a play on the word, “lupine”, which means “having to do with wolves” (from the Latin word “lupus”, for wolf).

Stephen Moyer loves to box and to help keep himself in shape, he often spars.

Kristin Bauer van Straten grew up on a farm in Wisconsin, engaging in activities such as, shooting guns, playing sports and riding horses.

Ryan Kwanten has always been very athletic and during his teen years he was the state welterweight boxing champion.

During its run, True Blood broke the record for having the show with the largest cable audience. A record that was previously held by the incredibly popular series, “The Sopranos“.

Carrie Preston has played the part of a sister to actress Felicity Huffman twice. Once in the popular television series, “Desperate Housewives” and once in the film, “Transamerica”.

When Anna Paquin appeared on a talk show, the host told her that if she was able to shoot a basketball through a hoop, he would give her $10,000. She agreed and made the shot, however, the host then refused to pay her. After the host received quite a bit of bad press, he then paid Paquin the money which she subsequently donated to charity.

Actor Alexander Skarsgard, who plays the Swedish character of Eric Northman, is actually from Stockholm, Sweden, which is convenient as Northman and his subjects speak the Swedish language.

Deborah Ann Woll is an advocate for a condition called Choroideremia, due in large part to her boyfriend, EJ Scott and his family being afflicted with the disease. Choroideremia is a condition that over a long period of time eventually blind it’s victims.

Though Todd Lowe has the same last name, he is not related to either Rob or Chad Lowe.

The Bon Temps police station is a real-life jail that is located in Hawthorne, California.

The character of Russell Edgington has a fondness for Waterford crystal and his home is filled with many different pieces. According to Suzuki Ingerslev, the production designer, the generous owners of the famed Irish crystal manufacturers willingly lent these pieces to the production due to their being avid fans of the series.

Alexander Skarsgard speaks French, English and Swedish.

Carrie Preston is married to actor Michael Emerson and has worked with him on several occasions, including the time that she played the mother of his character, “Ben Linus” on the series, “Lost”. This of course was possible because the character’s mother died shortly after his birth.

Lauren Bowles is married to actor Patrick Fischler and they have one child together.

Joe Manganiello has gone skydiving with the Army’s parachute team, “Golden Knights”.

William Sanderson played the character of “Larry” in the popular series, “Newhart” for eight years. He became quite well known for his famous catchphrase, “Hi. I’m Larry. This is my brother Darryl and this is my other brother Darryl.

True Blood has been broadcast in more than 40 countries.

Kristin Bauer van Straten is a sketcher as well as a painter and also does commissioned portraits.

When Anna Paquin finished filming the fifth season of True Blood, she was six months pregnant with her twins.

Ryan Kwanten was introduced to acting by simple chance. His mother had both Ryan and his younger brother in the car and was dropping off his brother at an audition for a theatrical agency. She was supposed to return immediately and take Ryan to swimming practice, but after a few minutes with no sign of her, Ryan then went inside the building and was immediately dragged into auditions.

Chris Bauer has been married to his wife, Laura, for seventeen years and they have two children.
