Chris Benoit is a name not many wrestling fans under the age of 15 might remember. Many under the age of 30 may even forget about the former World Heavyweight Champion who mastered the squared circle with technical grace for over two decades in NJPW, WWE and WCW. He’s considered by many to be one of the best professional wrestlers of all-time but good luck seeing any of his work.

Benoit’s name has been removed from just about all WWE programming, history and discussion shortly after the details of the 2007 Benoit family tragedy became public. While his best friend Eddie Guerrero has been a name that comes up all the time on WWE programming over the years by the like of Sasha Banks, CM Punk and even commentators like Mauro Ranallo and Michael Cole, Benoit has been blacklisted for obvious reasons. Now it seems like he might get a chance to have his story told.

The unauthorized Chris Benoit biopic, which has been tentatively titled ‘Crossface’, is getting closer to production. It has gone much of nowhere since the rumors of the movie being produced began back in 2013. The story allegedly is about Benoit’s career and the events leading up to the 2007 double murder/suicide of the Benoit family.

According to a recent IMDB leak, ‘Punisher: War Zone’ director Lexi Alexander has been chosen to direct the film. Alexander confirmed this on twitter along with writer Sarah Coulter.

As the police report states, Benoit murdered his wife and son on June 22, 2007, and then subsequently hung himself on June 24, 2007. Research on his brain suggests depression and brain damage from numerous concussions are likely contributing factors leading to the end Benoit’s life and his horrible decisions leading up to it. Many also believe the death of his best friend Eddie in 2005 might have also sent Benoit down a horrible spiral into depression.

Liev Schreiber, best known for his work in the ‘Scream’ series and playing Wolverine’s nemesis Sabretooth in the ‘Wolverine: Origins’ series, had previously been linked to star as Benoit in the film but those rumors proved to be untrue.

This is some great news for those who were fans of the ‘Canadian Crippler’. While his actions surrounding his death were undoubtedly despicable, the film could possibly take a deep dive into Benoit and show audiences the mindset of a man who was obviously not in the right state of mind.
