Two To See

Tags: movie film

Isn't it funny how things work out in life? For instance, these two movies came into my life at a time when I really needed them. Not too soon and not too late, but at exactly the right time. The names of the films are Begin Again (w/Keira Knightly and Mark Ruffalo) and Wish I Was Here (w/Zach Braff, Mandy Patinkin and Kate Hudson) These are the two most special, most moving films I have seen this year. Both of them made me weep, but for totally different reasons. I give them both 10/10. That being said, let me say a few words about each one:

Begin Again

Begin Again is about Mark Ruffalo as a run-down, divorced, pathetic shell of an ex-record company executive. His job that he was only recently fired from was to find musicians and give them deals to make albums for his company. One night on one of his drunken suppers he goes to a bar where none other than Keira Knightly is preforming an original song, and... yeah, I think you can see where this is headed: Mark hears Keira sing and bells and whistles start going off in his drunken head telling him he needs to record her. He confronts her after and gives her his business card and tells her she has what it takes to be a real musician. Obviously she [reluctantly] contacts him and together they jump through various obstacles and start making music together. Of course this all sounds very unoriginal, but I am being extremely vague in order to make it more of a treat for you when you watch it, you see? So anyway by the end of the movie they make an album and various other avenues of story telling are explored in the form of whether Keira actually wants to sign with a major record label, Mark and his teenage daughter's rocky relationship, Mark's relationship with his ex-wife (Catherine Keener), as well as Keira's relationship with her ex-boyfriend, a famous musician played excellently by Maroon 5's Adam Levine. I know that my crude babbling is not doing this movie any justice, but this movie is so special, so very dear to me, and well, I thought maybe this could get some of that across to you as to why it means so much to me and why I love it so: here is an original song from the movie, my favorite song from the movie, sung by Keira Knightly with a hefty amount of footage from the film accompanying it. Between you and me I liked this film a SMIDGON better that the latter mentioned in this post. I saw this film two months ago in the theater, it is currently out of theaters and very unfortunately Amazon does not have a release date for it on DVD/Blu Ray yet. But enjoy this taste!

Wish I Was Here

Wish I Was Here is Zach Braff's long-awaited sophomore effort in penning screenplays, his first of course being Garden State, another favorite of mine. This film is about Zach Braff's character's father getting diagnosed with cancer, and about how Zach's family and brother react to the cancer while also attempting to deal with their own issues simultaneously. Just like Zach's first voyage into the medium, this film is funny, while at the same time it is very sad, moving, and a bit of the magical. My only negative I have for this movie is, again, just like his first film, there is a very unnecessary scene of a sexual nature that doesn't belong-but the good far outweighs the bad. By the time the credits roll this movie deals a pretty meaty, gut-wrenching sucker punch to the emotional part of the stomach. Bring the Kleenex! I saw this movie a few months ago in theaters, it will be on DVD and Blu Ray on October 28th.
