Boost Your Training and Be Well with Yoga

Yoga Instructor Vicki, left, and gym owner Keely, right, at Champagne Toast Yoga on NYE!

Our Yoga & Champagne New Year’s Eve Class was a huge hit! It was so fun, and the floor space was filled to capacity. But you don’t need champagne to love yoga.

Yoga is your workout’s best friend. Think of it as more of a mindful, peaceful and playful practice. Just the same as in sports, you need to practice to get better. Yoga follows the same formula and even has it’s own special language. You don’t need to study for this test though. Yoga is meant to fit in at myTRAINER as part of your cross-training regimen.

Cross-training can help to improve your “sport” or main activity (like runners who cycle or dancers who swim), by learning and developing new skills outside of your routine practice. It’s also a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon with your friends from the club! Although those are good examples, cross-training can be more than that. It’s all about changing focus to improve your overall results.

So trying a new and different activity like yoga should ultimately lead to better results. Are you interested in better results?

Yoga at myTRAINER

That’s one of the reasons we brought yoga to myTRAINER as part of the membership (What? Free Yoga? YES!). We wanted to offer something that complements your training, but offers you a chance to also slow down, be calm, and still challenge yourself. We’ve had a great response to the classes so far! Lots of people—men and women of different ages, newbie and veteran yogis alike—are trying it and loving it. Why might you love it? Read on…

Benefits of Adding Yoga to Your Routine
  • Increases flexibility – Yoga increases your flexibility in general, but it can be good for specific sports, too. For example, “Hip opening poses such as pigeon are ideal for runners, lubricating the hip joints and helping prevent injury.” (Active.com)
  • Builds body awareness – Increases spacial awareness, increases kinesthetic dexterity and posture. Think about how important it is to be aware of your body and movement in activities like dancing, golf, tennis, hockey, and running.
  • Strengthens your core  This helps your properly move and increase the power of your movements.
  • Allows for recovery – Helps your body defend against overtraining and restore tired and fatigued muscles.
  • Improves mental state  Yoga and meditation’s benefits to your mind are well documented (read some great summaries here and here for a start). Decreasing stress will help you sleep better, train better, and feel better all around. Who doesn’t want that?
