Signed by Moyes in 2013, Varela didnt have the easiest of the starts. Months after joining United, his parents suffered a car accident and he had to leave for his homeland.
Like any other teenager, he couldn’t focus on his football for some time. In 2014, he was allowed to join Real Madrid on loan because Spain is comparatively closer to Uruguay which would have allowed him to reach home early in case of any emergency. He played 33 games for Real Madrid B and scored a goal.
22 year old Varela returned to United at the start of 2015-16 season. Life became slightly easy for him as United decided to let Saidy Janko join Celtic on a permanent deal. Marnick Vermijl too was sold and that made Varela a regular starter for the reserves.
Signing of Matteo Darmian made it difficult for him to even get a sniff at the first team as Valencia was the 2nd choice for the position. Varela almost left United in January 2016 window but LVG blocked the move and convinced the youngster that he has future at the club.
Valencia was still recovering from the surgery, Darmian fractured his rib while playing against Southampton and that opened the gates for the young Uruguayan. Varela was picked for the Europa League match and later started against Arsenal. 3 out of 4 goals scored by Rashford were initiated by Varela’s crosses. He has recorded 1 assist in his last 2 starts and earned praises for containing Sanchez.
