Sharing Our Sewing Spaces - Elena K.

Welcome to the 6th post in our series of "Sharing Our Sewing Spaces". In this series members of our Facebook Group will be sharing their sewing spaces with us!

Today we have Elena K, sharing her space with us. I am really enjoying this series as it's such FUN to grab a glimpse into another passionate sewists world!.....Over to you Elena:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to say hello and welcome to the happiest place on Earth. My precious Sewing room.

I think of it as my personal Disneyland because when I am in here, there's no worries, no pain or sadness, only happiness and joy. I consider being creative as a blessing. My son told me that he sees me as an artist. What a great compliment. In reality, I have to deal with chronic pain, a neurological brain disorder similar to Parkinson's and an unspoken certainty of a future filled with pain. I like to think that when I enter my sewing room, I lose myself in my need to create and keep my space organized.

I love to label every bin, drawer and shelf. One of my favorite sayings is "Nothing is ever lost, it's just where it doesn't belong." I keep my pattern envelopes protected and stored in fabric covered binders, each labeled by category. All pattern pieces and instructions are kept in Manila envelopes and filed numerically. My husband and I refinished the lateral file cabinet together and I love knowing that 50 years of collecting and protecting my patterns might possibly help preserve them for 50 more.

I often play movies while I'm creating, but there's nothing better than blasting out my favorite music to keep my head and my heart floating in my happy zone. I often sing along to my favorite songs as if I could actually carry a tune. I also feel a magic in here. Perhaps it's a special feeling.

I'm going to confess to something that I know is real. My fabric is usually purchased without a plan. I just know that my fabric will reveal its purpose and tell me what I need to do to to make it complete. After I transform my fabric, I have to straighten out my sanctuary to prepare for the next project.

A favorite thing to do is make clothes and accessories for my girl, Barbie. I know you've only been in my world a very short time, but I hope you too can feel any negativity quickly disappear when surrounded by my many penguins, my hodge podge of furniture and the many odds and ends I keep on hand because you never know when you might need it. My dear friend Debbie said it best when she said I was a cross between Martha Stewart and Macgyver. Martha Macgyver, okay, that works for me, as long as I don't have to cook!!
