Technology -- Stupidity abounds

Tags: technology

I'm at the point with technology where stupid things about most anything related to technology are starting to really bother me. In 2014, with some of the brightest and most innovative minds in technology creating things that are suppose to make our lives easier, why does it feel like these things are making our lives more difficult?

With the costs of computers, internet, cable tv, mobile phones and the like going up, up, up and becoming more difficult for the 'average Joe' to own, let alone maintain, when are the consumers going to wake up and start demanding better quality gadgets and systems from your hi-tech companies? No more excuses.

Am I the only person on this planet who realizes all the stupid things about technology that should work, but don't? Am I the only one on this planet who cares that technology should work, without flaws, before a company moves on to develop something new? Come on, people. Wake up. Stop spending money on almost perfect products and start demanding something better.

APPLE
I blogged about this before (iPhone Phlub), but I hate my iPhone 5. Sometimes, the texting app will suggest the spelling of a word and sometimes, it doesn't. Even if I am only one letter off, the damn thing will sit there like it doesn't know how to spell anything. The only choice it gives me is to copy, paste or delete the word. Totally stupid. I especially hate my iPhone because there is nothing on the phone to move the cursor! Instead, you have to tap the screen where you want the cursor to go. The problem? Who's finger is small and thin enough to make the cursor go exactly where you want it to go, each and every time? Not mine. Get a clue, Apple developers.

Poor things. So dumb for being so smart. You can't learn common sense from a book.

YAHOO! HIRES A BUNCH OF YAHOOS
A perfect example of easy, already proven technology being flawed is the new Yahoo! mail. I have had my Yahoo! email account since 1999 and have NEVER had so many issues with something as simple as an email program. Technology companies are so worried about launching the next big thing, that the little things that should not be a problem are beginning to become problems.

For example: certain keys I hit on my keyboard will cause the email to close in the middle of typing. I don't know what they are and, of course, I am unable to recreate it because the next time, it's fixed. At some point, however, it will happen again.

I tweeted using #fuckyahoo and someone from Yahoo! replied, asking what my issue was. Really? On Twitter? How do I explain several issues on twitter and feel like someone on the other end understands what I am trying to say in 142 characters or less? Don't reach out in the first place if you don't really want to know, Yahoo!

TIME WARNER CABLE
Time Warner Cable is just as bad as Apple and Yahoo!. TWC nearly charges what a small car payment would be for a first-time car owner, just to have cable. Which is bad, but wait. That's NOT the worst part. The TWC equipment is slow, out-of-date and unreliable technology. It's time for TWC to invest in new DVRs with faster channel changing capabilities and larger storage capacity and better, faster remotes.

As a long-time TWC subscriber, I can honestly say that I have rarely had a week pass without issues with my digital cable. If not the picture, it's the sound. If it's not the sound, it's the picture. Half the time, it's both. WTF? Let's not forget the DVR remotes that not only think slowly, they operate poorly or not at all. Even with new batteries, I sometimes need to be directly in front of the DVR box to get the remote to read. Um, doesn't that sound like 1970s technology to you? What do we, as customers, need to do to get decent equipment Time Warner Cable? Geez...

If you're going to charge your customers premium rates for something, it better work without any glitches. I mean, let's be serious, shit happens with technology, but when it's continual over years of time, something is wrong. Don't raise your rates BEFORE you upgrade your services and technology.
_______

These are just a few of the flaws with everyday technology that should operate better, but don't. No more excuses. It's up to us, Joe public, to stand up and demand more for what we are already paying. The cost of technology far outweighs the overall performance we receive, as consumers. Stop the madness. Demand more from big companies and stop paying for 'in-between' technology and products. Wait for the real thing that has it all. It's about time these huge corporations start giving us what we are really paying for without any missing links so we can upgrade in six months.

Stop getting screwed and start getting spoiled. We have the power.
