Live Updates – Monday, March 16

4:15 p.m. A couple more livestreaming resources. First, there’s the Social Distancing Festival. Organized by Toronto-based lyricist and book writer Nick Green, the site is collecting global performance streaming events and serving as a central hub. Much of the content is classical music and opera (thought not exclusively). Check it out. Also, Caveat, a Lower East Side performance venue, is continuing some of its presentations virtually by livestream. Check here for there website. –JMB

2:10 p.m. A quick update–the organizers of the Howlround panel this evening have also launched an online resource, COVID-19 Freelance Artist Resources, containing important information for freelance artists affected by work postponement and cancellation. —JMB

1:50 p.m. Welcome to Culturebot’s ad hoc liveblog for Monday. In the interests of simplifying and centralizing information, except for substantial articles that stand on their own, I’m going to be using a single post each day to provide an ongoing list of updates. As always, if you have something to add to this post, please contact me at cbot.covid [at] gmail.com, the special Email Address I’ve set up to centralize communications for us regarding artists impacted by the closures caused by COVID-19 and the public health response to it.

One of the main things I’ll be trying to highlight are online resources, streaming services, and live streams sessions that artists are using to move their practices and performances from IRL to the digital space. If you have anything to add, again, use the above email address. I’ve already spoken with a number of people about this and will be providing more updates shortly, but for now I want to point out the following:

  • OntheBoards.tv is making its library of high-quality documentation of live performance free to stream through April 20. You can read about it here. OtB TV has a collection of fantastic pieces including The Rude Mechs’ Method Gun (an all-time favorite of mine), Young Jean Lee’s The Shipment, and Okwui Okpokwasili’s Bronx Gothic, among many others. Highly recommended, particularly if you missed any of these works.
  • HowlRound is presenting a livestreamed panel, “Artists in a Time of Global Pandemic,” tonight from 8-10 pm Eastern. You can watch it here (I will be). (ASL and Captioned)
  • Finally, choreographer and teacher Teddy Tedholm of TedTedPerformance is livestreaming dance classes via Instagram; the next sessions is today at 4 pm Eastern. You can find the stream here.

Over the weekend, we initiated our “Inventory of Lost & Delayed Art“; I don’t have an official count yet, but I believe we’re at over 30 shows cancelled or postponed from now through April. I will continue updating it as I have time.
